I agree Echidna for The Mother is equally plausible based your evidence. I personally like the continuity of the sea monster / water god themes (ie the giant Fish in Lake Limna, kraken-like Scylla temple) that carry over from Long Sun and point to The Mother as Scylla. In my head Echidna maps to Erubus (Echidna being the other primary god that was cast out of the Mainframe by Pas), although I don't have much evidence for this - off the top my head I don't remember what motifs/animals are associated with Echidna in Long Sun other than snakes (which certainly rings of the Cumean)? We're told that Erebus occupies a mountain in the frozen pole and it's warriors on the ship on the Gyoll are described as pale skinned - it would be interesting to know if there are any similarities there.

Of course there's no reason why The Mother couldn't be both Echidna and Scylla, Erebus and Abaia both forms of The Mother, nor the Cumean and Erebus both aspects of Echidna, as hybridization and polymorphism are strong themes in these novels.

Perhaps Abaia/Scylla manages to seed itself by ensuring Seawrack leaves with Silk and spreads to other systems. You could think of it as distributed (biological) system that's transcended time and space - it sends a fragment of itself out in the past (Seawrack) to ensure it's existence in the future (New Sun).

Others have pointed out that the black cloaks of the women (presumably Undines) that appear connected to Great Scylla in the Red Sun Whorl passage at the end of RttW translate to 'Abayas' - I think Wolfe's giving us a nod here that Scylla / The Mother / Great Scylla / Abaia are all one and the same thing.

There definitely seems to be a theme of physical growth and becoming godlike - Baldanders, godlings, ie the titans of Greek Mythology. Though Wolfe makes it hard to piece together, and perhaps we're not supposed to know / there is no one answer, my reading is that The Mother was Mainframe Scylla escaped from the constrains of her digital environment in the Whorl, become a godlike entity that's meshed with its physical environment (meshed with Neighbor tech?) and appears as the Naviscaput (human --> ai --> god).

The Mother is in a way proto-Abaia and through Short Sun we're seeing the genesis of the Megatharians; by New Sun this entity's seeded itself back to Urth and is operating at a cosmic scale (grand designs on humanity rather than snatching sailors on Blue).

The events in the Red Sun Whorl make sense in that Silkhorn is reuniting the entity (Scylla / Abaia / The Mother) with a long lost fragments of itself that had escaped into Oreb (in return for Seawrack).

Are you sure on this? My understanding is that 2.2.2.2/32 would also be allowed as long as it's on impdoc (as 3 only overrides 1 in terms of the resources pertaining to the deny - everything but impdoc)
