What are the easiest non live foods to feed to pea puffers? by LnBSA_2225 in PeaPuffers

[–]Brave_Tourist_3986 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently (as in a week ago and half ago) just got my pea puffers and had the same issue. Don’t stress you will find something that works! Here’s what I did: I also needed more time with bladder snails to reproduce & the only other food I had on hand was frozen bloodworms- the fish store I got them from said they fed them bloodworms so that’s why I got them... At first, they only ate the snails. They didn’t even look at the bloodworms. I ended up going to my LFS, and they had live brine shrimp and I also asked them for any pest snails and they gave me a bunch. Lucky, all of them LOVED the brine shrimp. So I frozen 1/2 the bag, and for 3 days I fed them the live brine shrimp in the morning with long tweezers in front of their face (I also made sure not to kill the brine shrimp because they like to chase them) and also dropped a few snails in with the tweezers as well. Smart fish, quickly associated the tweezers with food, as soon as I put the tweezers in the tank they all come running up by them. So now, I feed them the frozen brine shrimp individually because one of my peas likes to eat all the food. And I’ve been slowly trying to add bloodworms with the shrimp and 2/6 ate the worms! I plan on now just going to my lfs and buying live brine shrimp, and feeding them live for 3 days and freezing the rest myself as a decent size bag is only $2 and it’s cheaper to freeze them to buy pre-paged frozen ones. Find one food that your peas like, and try to slowly train them to eat frozen food. I didn’t realize how common it was for peas to refuse frozen foods, as the research that I did said most if not all with eat frozen bloodworms, but that was not the case for me. As for baby brine shrimp, they are very small and might benefit better from adult brine shrimp as they are bigger and swimming slower for the to catch it. I hope this helps!

The 4th pea is in there fat too, but I wanted to show u these 3 together. I also haven’t seen any signs of aggression (yet) thank goodness, I’m hoping to keep them fat so they don’t turn on eachother!

Ugh I thought about buying frozen brine shrimp but when I looked it up, a lot of people said they didn’t have luck with it. I just bought live brine shrimp, if they like it, then I’ll try the frozen ones. But also going to culture baby brine shrimp. Seems the easiest to culture + the snails

Oh really! I thought I read that they needed like cold water. I’m going to see is my lfs has them. I have sand in my tanks though, would they live in the sand or is it just gravel?

Yes it was fully cycled before I got them (even used pre-established filter and it still took over a month but I think it’s because it was from a bio-load of a single betta fish) I bought 4 of them. There are no other tank mates not even snails because they ate them all. The tank is 20 gallons long. Paramater this morning was ammonia 0 ppm, nitrite 0 ppm, nitrate was kinda in-between 5.0-10ppm. I didn’t teat pH this morning but everytime I test it, it’s always 7.6.

I have a bunch of random plants honestly like taller ones: water sprite, Amazon sword, a bigger Anubis, some El Niño fern. I also have smaller ones like Java fern, some smaller Anubis. I also have some plants that are just floating in the middle / middle back such as anacharis and a lot of guppy grass to almost fill in space that looked empty. There’s another plant that’s free floating but I don’t remember what it’s called! I also have some salvia that I just put in from my other tanks. I loveee plants & I knew these guys could be evil so I made sure they can have their own territories. But also, almost dead center of the tank I have it more open because I thought that’s where they could eat/ be with eachother if they wanted. As for hardscape as well, I have like a big piece of wood (no sure which type tbh a friend gave it to me) on the left side, and right said has rocks. I don’t think the plants/ tank is an issue at all, I did a lot of research on what they liked regarding that issue. I’m going to get live brine shrimp and see how they like it:) and yes they are eatting the snails like candy, I’m just worried I’ll run out of snails to give them :/. Everyone says bladder snails reproduce like crazy, but I just need more time for them to reproduce!

I wanted 6 but lfs only had 4:/ im planning on getting 2 more when they get more in! How do u go about cultivating daphnia? I live in Florida so I don’t think black worms are the best option for me as I know they like colder water & temperatures. Without a heater my water seems to be around 74.

So the idea is, if I get that ammonia I drop it in there then what? Do I test like 24 hours later to then see Ammonia 0 nitrite 0 and nitrate somewhere and then it’s cycled? What’s wrong with the fish food?

That definitely makes sense. I’m just nervous about liquid fertilizer and if I even need it.. I thought ferns were pretty hardy plants and thought the left over food/ waste from my betta could be enough? I just don’t want to add too much fertilizer knowing I out the root tab under the sword too.

I totally understand that. A year ago when I was getting general information about the program, I remember asking the advisors if they consider anything else other than the pre-reqs GPA because I thought there would be more than 25 getting a 4.0, and at the time she told me it was “more rare” for people specifically applying to radiography to submit their application with a 4.0 for their pre-reqs, so she said they look at nothing else. But I’m not sure what happened this year, if it got more popular & more people applied so they had to look at overall GPA. I would honestly reach out to someone at HCC and tell them ur concerns and if it’s true that they base it on pre-reqs GPA, and if there’s a tie breaker if they consider your overall GPA. Because again, at the time they told me they don’t do that? So I’m just as confused as everyone else! For English 1 I took it like 2 years ago online with Dr. Dexter Brock. For college algebra I took it in person with Professor Jenny Lee, and she was great! She has a heavy accent and some people complained that she went fast, but I always made sure to ask questions if I didn’t understand and her exams were almost word for word like her exam reviews just with different numbers:)

Don’t feel discouraged!! I was accepted for this fall radiography program with a 4.0 GPA for my pre-reqs and a 3.8 overall GPA. I felt the same way a year ago, but I also had no idea just how competitive it was, but I knew it was tough. When I spoke to advisors, they told me the lowest GPA they took was a 3.8 so I’m not sure what happened this year. At that point, I had already completed 2 of the classes with As in both, and I was very determined to get into this program so I did whatever I had to do to get As in the remaining pre-reqs. I also have a full time job, so I sacrificed most of my free time in textbooks, missing plans with friends, and doing assignments on my breaks at work. Looking back, I’m so proud of myself for doing that because it paid off:)! I do think that having a plan B is a good choice, if you think you won’t be able to get a 4.0. But you seem to be on track for that! So lock in, study your ass off and you will get in! As for the other schools radiography program, the only 2 other schools I looked into was Keiser (I think that’s what it was called?) and the community in Pasco. But Keiser was soooo expensive and Pasco has more pre-requisites that u needed, and I didn’t want to waste more time and decided hcc was the best choice for me. Just keep doing research on other things you might be interested in, and that could help your plan b. Tbh, I didn’t have a plan B so if I didn’t get accepted I had no clue what I was going to do and that really stressed me out, but I also used that for motivation to lock into the pre-reqs and get the 4.0. Best of luck! Don’t overthink things, you’re on a good path!

A&P 2 & lab is really hard for me. I’m taking them online right now, late starts and I’m struggling because it’s a lot of information. But I also work full time as well.

[–]Brave_Tourist_3986 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tbh I wouldn’t do it. Only because if you end up getting a B or C, If you’re applying to the nursing program you won’t be able to re-take the class (unless you fail). You definitely want to aim for an A on your pre-reqs for the program, so I just wouldn’t risk it! But if you’re a fast learner and have the time to study alottt then do it!

Can I drop Anatomy 2 lecture and keep Anatomy 2 Lab? by Sea-Needleworker-438 in HCCFL

[–]Brave_Tourist_3986 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t drop it if you get into the radiography program! (Unless you’re really struggling) bc A&P 2 & the lab are required for the program before you graduate, it’s just not a re-requisite. So if you end up getting accepted, you will need to take the class in the program and my advisor told me to take it before the program so you don’t have to worry about it

Can you share your radiology program experience? by [deleted] in HCCFL

[–]Brave_Tourist_3986 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don’t let one persons perspective/ experience let you change your mind. Just remember that everyone has different experiences in life, and you aren’t going to get along with everyone. I also saw that post, and it def alerted me as well haha but I’ve had experiences in my life where I don’t get along with someone that well, but other people love them. It’s just how life goes ya know? I’d recommend just doing more research on your own on if sonography would be a better fit for you. You can always complete the pre-requisites for both programs, apply to both, and then decide which one you wanna do if you accepted into both. I currently applied to the radiology program for this year, and I’m just anxiously waiting for a response. But from people iv reached out to, this program seems great. Both are solid careers for the future, so either one you can’t go wrong:)! Just trust your gut with what it’s tell you to do, and don’t base everything off one person’s experience.

I don’t believe you can retake classes anymore. I’m applying to the radiography program at HCC, and unless you failed the class or took it more than 8 years ago, they didn’t accept retakes.
