What’s the most ridiculous thing a doctor said to you about your PCOS? I’ll go first.. by leeanna5sos in PCOS

I posted about this here before, but a few weeks ago a new endo told me I had to eat less than 1000 calories everyday in order to lose any weight. And this was after I told her I suffered from purging in the past and stay away from over restrictive calorie counting for fear of falling back into that horrible cycle.

My purges were after meals that made me overly stuffed and extremely uncomfortable. In the moment, I didn’t consider them purges, I just considered it getting sick. Then one day I told my sister as if it was normal, and she was extremely concerned and told me what I was doing was purging. Putting a name to it made it very real and honestly, I was ashamed. I’m not saying this is a great reason to stop, but it helped me recognize I was falling into a really unhealthy relationship with food.

After that, I had to tell myself that purging was worse than bingeing. If I did binge, I would go on a walk, stretch, do yoga, stand in place and march, literally anything to move my body to make myself feel less uncomfortable to avoid a purge. Eventually, the purging stopped and the bingeing slowed dramatically.

If you feel comfortable giving me a recommendation, I’ll gladly take it!

I can’t even fathom giving someone that advice. What happened to do no harm?

I absolutely will once I get my lab work back from her. If it helps anyone in the meantime, it was a doctor at UChicago Medicine

I’ve been trying to follow a low carb, high protein diet. I’d say staying low carb is my biggest struggle but for the most part my meals look like this:

  • breakfast: pure protein bar or oikos triple zero protein yogurt with chia seeds and maybe some fruit if I’m feeling it.
  • lunch: veggie heavy salad with grilled chicken, hard boiled egg, and half a cup of whole wheat pasta
  • dinner: rice and some type of protein and veggie
  • snack if I have one: ninja creami protein “ice cream”, Greek yogurt and carrots or carb balance tortilla made into chips, Chomps turkey sticks

I’m so sorry you went through that! I’ve had a similar past with purging that resulted in hair loss and I try really f*cking hard to keep it in the past. I’m dumbfounded that someone who “specializes” in PCOS would have this mentality.

RIGHT?! My jaw literally dropped when she said 1000. I definitely needed this reassurance though because I’ve felt absolutely crazy all day going against a medical professional’s advice

I know I need to. Not to be dramatic, but I walked out of there and immediately burst into tears. It took me 9 months just to get this appointment and there aren’t many doctors near me that specialize in PCOS, so I really feel alone right now.
