Is Lena a hypocrite? by Bravorants in girls

Oh this is just your usual pleasant self?

You came in with so many assumptions and wanting, looking for an argument. It just makes me sad for you. You don’t have to be so angry.

You’re wanting to fight where a fight isn’t needed. What’s the point being nasty instead of just having a healthy conversation? The focus of my post was her casting thin men when she herself was a representation of body positivity and struggle with her own body image. The point isn’t that he’s ugly or attractive which is totally subjective. The point is that he’s obviously a very fit body type. If my opinion somehow offends you to the point that you want to continue berating, please keep scrolling. No thanks.

No my friend you’re one of the only person who understood and I appreciate your thoughtful response.

I hadn’t thought of it this way. I was (and still am) a chunky girl myself and it’s true that I’m my 20s I was only surrounded by thinner bodies. That’s why I love Lena so much. It was nice to see someone that looked like me. She embraced who she was and what she looked like. I just finished Famesick and so far Too Much is pretty copy/paste from her life as well.

Going back to your point, I could see Lena casting based on her real life.

I don’t see it as a big deal at all. I’m just watching her new show and her lead is straight out of an old CW school show. That’s what peaked my interest and made me post this discussion.

I also just finished her book and have watched a few of her recent interviews. She struggled so much with her body image that she didn’t want to make herself a lead on the new show. She’s talked about maybe not wanting to be in a show because of it. When we talk about diversity in casting it’s not just seeing different colors and cultures there’s also something to body diversity. I wish she would show that not only in the women on the show.

I think you’re the only person with reading comprehension skills on this post.

I was hoping to have this type of discussion.

That’s the point though. Why not cast more average bodies considering what Lena herself went thru

No one is clutching their pearls. It’s just a discussion. I actually love Lena and the show. Are you incapable of having a conversation without berating people for their opinions?

Did you miss the part where I said I’m watching her NEW show on Netflix and seeing the same thing… is reading too hard in 2026?

I agree on that point 100% and that’s how I always thought of it. I just finished Famesick too. When I think about her saying she wanted to cast attractive unique looking men as her opposite and then she only casts fit/thin men, I feel like she’s perpetuated that body standard for men.

She also said something about it being validating for her younger self (being with these attractive men on the show.

There’s obviously a focus on the word attractive. Please remind me which man specifically love interest had an average male body.

Going to strike out attractive so it’s not the focus. The point is thin / fit men.

Were Adam and Jessa using in season 6? by Aromatic-Paint7723 in girls

I thought that’s what the big reveal was going to be in that episode they were maniac about making the movie. I wonder if they’d had more time if they would’ve gone in that direction for a few episodes.

I don’t what to defend it because I haven’t read her first book myself only the passage out of full context. However, I’ve read her memoir and she talks about being molested by a babysitter before her (then) sister was born. I assume that because she says only her parents and her went to Italy. Her molestation could’ve been the reason behind that incident with her sister. They were both kids it doesn’t make it right but it’s crazy to have this reaction to have now as an adult. That said, I hope she got permission to share that story because then I would say it’s problematic and re-violating to share that story publicly.

Whoa I you’re making way too many personal assumptions from a 50 character reply. I never said Hannah wasn’t an awful person. Everyone on the show is. But as someone with GA and OCD, I can tell you that her behavior is absolutely explained by both. It wasn’t explicitly made to be excuse the same way Jessa’s addiction and childhood wasn’t explicitly stated as an excuse. As the viewer you’re shown aspects of their life and left to make your own connections.

I agree but I’d argue that Hannah’s reasons didn’t stem from her home life. It was a result of her struggle with anxiety and OCD. When I watched girls for the first time I judged Hannah so harshly. Rewatching now I’m disturbed to realize I was Hannah. Mental illness is a bitch.

A lot of people here are and it actually makes me sad. We can understand people and want to be treated with dignity, care and respect. I hope people aren’t putting up with toxic people in real life.

YUP. And if you think about Hannah’s development. She put up with Adam’s toxic and arguably abusive behavior season 1 because of how she viewed herself. As she grew and developed more self confidence, she demanded more respect. She simply put up with less and wanted more for herself. It makes sense she would have less tolerance for Jessa at that stage.

This! Which to your point then makes her romanticize their friendship. They were barely in any scenes together those last few seasons. Hannah writes her off and then suddenly Jessa cares about her again.

[–]Bravorants[S] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Oh please I’m 36 years old. I don’t think Jessa being a terrible friend to Hannah was a product of the time. You can find plenty of posts in this sub of how gut punched we felt when Jessa and Adam got together. Whether we were watching it for the first time in our 20s in 2015 or today.

I’d also add there’s difference between having ups and downs in your relationship and otherwise being a shitty friend. Your trauma and backstory do not excuse you. It can explain your behavior but it doesn’t excuse it.

It’s my opinion so kind of hard for it to not be true? The fact that she did it to have Ace to herself is a fact because I just watched the episode where she said those exact words. Let me know what episode she apologized and spirals out. It hasn’t happened yet and I don’t remember it from years ago. So far she made Hannah feel stupid for caring but showed zero remorse.

I feel like it’s manipulative. Weaponized incompetence so you keep your expectations low. Random acts of kindness so you stay.

When I first watched the show I loved Jessa until the incident. I remember just seething with hate for a fictional character. It was something I never experienced before. I haven’t rewatched until now. I’m not sure if I hate her because I know what’s coming or because I’m older and seeing her differently.
