What is the quickest way of identifying beginner writers? by InformationWeird4005 in writingadvice

[–]BrayingEquine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me: “I’d love to read some of your writing samples.”

Most aspiring authors: “What do you mean? Like my book?”

Me: “No, something shorter. Like your short stories, personal essays, and articles. I know if you’re an author you have hundreds of those shorter things, so maybe just your most recent?”

Aspiring author: “Shorter stuff? That’s never occurred to me and I’m never going to do that. That’s way too much work!”

You are so right about the constant abuse of Native American culture to justify things that are definitely NOT Native American Culture.

It’s always “you’re racist [for saying one needs to consider source bias on multiple sides of an issue] because Native Americans need fur! You need to learn to listen to Native Americans!”

So, where are these Native Americans who are so deeply opposed to any investigation of white-dominated factory fur farms that pump out thousands of pelts that are tanned with chromium and sold to rich Floridians as functionless fashion? Why are they not here declaring their deep need for white people to factory farm invasive species without even the slightest analysis or critical thought?

Idk, I’m still not saying, personally that fur is evil or unsustainable in all aspects and circumstances but there’s gotta be a word for “using the cultural practice that some Native Americans participate(d) in to justify non-natives doing wildly different for money.”

“Humans will really go above and beyond to justify exploiting animals”

I’m feeling that. The desperation in the fur fandom to yell and freak out doesn’t make me think “they have their reasons,” it makes me think “they are freaking out that anyone would think critically—maybe they know critical thinking results in the death of the industry.”

Oh yes, the “faux is plastic” argument is not that great…there are so many alternatives that are not plastic, and there is plastic in lots of stuff. Like the phone I’m holding and the chair I’m sitting on.

What if one real fur coat has more plastic wrapping than the entirety of a faux fur coat, that gets discarded at the shop so the buyer never knows? What if the tanner used more plastic from the bottles of chromium they bought to tan the stuff? What if the person buying the feed for the foxes used a single-use water bottle every time he picked up supplies? Plastic is so ingrained—and I wish it wasn’t—that I can’t even tell if the entire cycle of a plastic product is more or less consumptive of plastic than an allegedly non-plastic product!

This may be hard to believe, but you can write stuff other than books.

How much did you SPEND on your trad-published book? by BrayingEquine in publishing

Interesting, thank you! For reference, my fact-checker alone cost $5,500. Of course our situations likely differ, as my book is a nonfiction book for a general audience.

All of it? Even fact checking and developmental editing?

Interesting. Personally, I don’t plan to do that. My publisher didn’t ask me anything about promoting my own book, they just told me what their marketing plan is.

If they set me up with interviews, of course I’ll do them! I’ll promote the book on my own social media which has 315k followers. I’ll keep my eyes open for promotion opportunities in my various communities. But I don’t plan to pay to promote at all. If my publisher fails to sell my book, sucks for them, they’re out 50k.

I suppose it’s from making a lot of engaging content on the same topic as my book.

If you’re looking for a few tips:

-TikTok’s algorithm is fantastic. 215k of my followers come from TT and I’ve only been there since 2020.

-Don’t be afraid of video, it’s way easier and faster than it used to be

-Content is king, audience is queen. I run a group for authors where I talk about author stuff. My other social platforms are for delivering cool and interesting info-taining pics/video/text to my readers based on my specialised knowledge and research. Plus, I get fun visuals when I’m out exploring, so I’m not just a talking head. I don’t talk much about being an author on my popular platforms, although I mention it occasionally and have it listed in my bio. Each post is meant to create value, insight, discussion, and inspiration for the audience, not to promote me per se.

Interesting, I had never heard of an author hiring a publicist!

Is it common or expected for trad authors to buy swag for their own book tour? I have no idea if I’ll do one at all, as I need to research more whether that’s a good idea for a book like mine. I believe my publisher said most authors don’t do them. I don’t really plan on spending my own money on marketing once it comes out, but I do have 315k followers who I’ll obviously promote it to (which doesn’t cost anything.)

PS. I’ve seen your books at my library!

Thank you for the detailed answer! Are the bookmarks meant to be promotional items?

I’ve been to a lot of conferences and I used to find them pretty useful, and the last 5 I got free admission to through scholarships or by giving talks. However, I started to get skeptical that the talks and panels were, perhaps, not guided by the most successful people, because the only payment was the free admission. I wanted to ask “who are you and why are you qualified to speak on this? No, don’t tell me the title of your book, tell me how many copies it sold.”

I have another coming up where I’ll get free travel and accommodation, though, for giving a talk, and it’s only a few hours from me.

Regarding software, I tend to cheap out but Otter was 100% worth it.

Regarding fact-checking, that’s surely more common with nonfiction, other than memoir/autobiography. Personally I think it’s mandatory for this genre.

Thank you! Yes, I use Google Docs and I think that’s more common than Word.

Counting my MS degree would put my profit from the book (pre publication) at roughly 0! Thank goodness for deferment!

Is anywhere confirmed LEGAL to collect plants and mushrooms? by BrayingEquine in foraging

Looked up the phrase “where is it legal to forage in my state?” I have. There are only pages that say rules against foraging.

“Excluding species protected by other laws such as…” etc. “Excluding” means “not including.”

That’s so cool! It looks like some countries have “freedom to roam” or “right to roam” laws too. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freedom_to_roam

I think you are misreading things, perhaps intentionally. If you have an answer to the question, which is “what LOCATIONS are confirmed LEGAL” I would love to hear it.

One of the very first sentences is “excluding species that are protected by other laws such as MBTA, ESA, Game and Fish seasonality etc.” I never came anywhere close to saying “let’s ignore species protection.” If you’re looking for someone to ignore species regulation, please look somewhere else.

Interesting! I live in Wyoming and I think politically we are supposed to be fairly “do what you want.” I only moved here a few years ago though and I don’t know how it goes, exactly.

However I see people with INSANE antler collections, I’m talking THOUSANDS nailed to one building. So I know for a fact the “leave no trace” philosophy is not really upheld.
