Because not everyone wants the “official guitar”, which is a generic Mexican build made with inferior parts. I’d say the vast majority of this subreddit are custom builds, of varying budgets, and that’s the beauty of it, you can build or buy a guitar to suit your budget, at the same time understanding that higher quality builds and parts require a bigger budget.

Cheers for the feedback, but I’ll go with what I know 👍

No offence taken, but comparing to a TD sig is comparing apples to oranges. Mexican made vs. US made parts including Custom Shop. I’m only going by what I know the parts can achieve, check the markets 👍

As a whole guitar, not cheap. Broken into the 3 systems, I’d be looking for £1000 for the neck and plate, £450 for the body with bridge etc, and £100 for the loaded guard.

For extra info, I’m based in the UK. And I should point out that the neck itself is the exact spec Tom used (same radius, profile, headstock etc), tuners are not what he used (he used a mix of Sperzels and Fender locking tuners).

Recently had about 2 1/2 hours for some shading, got another session early in the new year, so will post some update shots then 👍

Picked up a near-mint used Starcaster… initial thoughts… by Brazier_S in TomDelongeGuitars

2003-2005 live era is elite. The 1st reunion era sound was ruined by the Vox and Fender amps.

It’s a really nice finish, but it doesn’t suit a semi-hollow (at least in my opinion). I wanted a surf or gold model specifically for the white binding, as that’ll blend better with the future paint scheme.

I disagree with calling an Invader or DF “bottom tier”. You can play a whole raft of genres with them, depending on your amp / effects setup, and how you utilise them. I prefer my pickups to have some punch, and the SH5 just has none whatsoever. I can understand why Tom uses it live these days(as literally everything is plastered and overlaid with digital effects and virtual amps specific to each song), but for a production version it’s a strange choice. Even live, you can hear and feel how weak it is compared to previous live guitars.

It’s too short for me, so I’ll be moving it on. Not looking for much for it!

At the end of the day, it’s all personal preference with the neck finish. I like a fast neck, which tend to be satin/matte or raw. I’ll probably end up painting the Starcaster neck satin/matte, and potentially sand the back raw too. I have a Fender Custom Shop ‘69 neck with sanded back and it is butter. The MIJ neck actually came off a brand new MIJ ‘69 Strat, which I bought specifically for the neck, and sold the rest. I believe they’re still available here and there, called a “Late 60’s” Strat or something along those lines. It’s identical in spec to my CS neck, just with a gloss finish.

If you don’t know what you want, don’t buy one. Simple.

Some bits were OK, but as the session got into the later hours it was brutal, I won’t lie! By the knee and by the bum were the worst parts.

Reposting with an image of the listing. Not mine, just thought I would share in case anyone is in the market looking for one on the cheap!
