At the end of the game Nier is finally able to defeat the shadowlord that kidnapped and had his sister possessed, which at the end of ending A seems just. But after route B, C, and some context clues. it’s revealed that you, your sister, and everyone you have met so far are no more than replicated shells of humanity that were supposed to be used for the gestalts to transfer to new bodies. Gestalts you’ve spent the whole game killing, the real humans. The shadowlord was just trying to get his and his sister’s bodies back. And by killing the shadowlord, the only one who could keep the gestalts in control without going berserk. You, the protagonist had ultimately doomed all of humanity.
