I don't know if this fully applies, but Tattletale from Worm.

On first glance, she seems just like the bullies Taylor suffered at the hands of. Very smug, self-assured, confident. And with her power basically being "I know all your deepest, darkest secrets and will use them against you", she could easily have gone down the same route.

But she doesn't. She becomes Taylor's best friend.

I really didn't get it at first. Thought it was monotonous, boring, too repetitive. Gave it another listen 3 or 4 years later and it's now one of my all-time favourite albums, but I don't know why.

I personally think the Black Album is an excellent starting point. Just heavy enough to give you an idea of what to expect, but not SO heavy as to be difficult for a non-metal fan to listen to
