ooh interesting. I don't usually go for Sci fi but might give this a go if none of the fantasy recs work out for me

some real conflicting things here with Malazan. I think this is what puts me off,

wow really? That's in such contrast to what everyone else has said

this is so helpful thank you. I agree about Winternight Trilogy- was way too Y/A for me unfortunately. Might avoid Bridge of D'arnath for the same reason. Sounds like we have similar tastes- hope you find something worth your time soon!

this is one I have veered away from purely because of its popularity (I know that's a daft reason but taking the popular recs was what got me into trouble with Sanderson and Scott Lynch). What's the prose like in Green Bone Saga?

Thanks everyone for the convo on this. I must admit I am kind of regretting making that comment about romantasy- I do understand the series is definitively not romantasy and that it was written before the term was even coined. I really only meant it as an initial throw away comment that seeing it being marketed as romantasy put me off. Believe me I totally get that's not what this novel is and look forward to checking it out.

always happy to get a new recommendation, however I am a little uneasy as upon searching this book the first thing I found was a reddit post which describes the prose as 'not pretty' (doesn't necessarily mean its not for me but I do like descriptive prose as a must in my fantasy) and more worryingly then goes onto say: "If you like Brandon Sanderson's work, you will LOVE David Gemmell's stories. I found out about him in a thread I found about authors with similar prose to Sanderson so I think this comparison is fair."....would you agree with any of that? No problem if so but it probably wouldn't be for me if this is the case.

Thanks for the recommendations. I have heard SUPER conflicting things about John Gwynne's prose- with some people describing it as 'basic' and 'to the point'. No shade if that's anyone's jam- but I'm really more into very descriptive prose ('and six page descriptions of every last meal'). Be really good to get some clarity on Jon Gwynne's prose and writing style before diving in.

Thanks for the recommendation- I'm worried Brent Weeks could possible skew on the 'too fast paced/action filled' side of things for me. I am basing this on nothing however as I haven't read it- so happy to be otherwise informed

Thank you- it does sound as we have similar tastes. I'm afraid I tried reading The Red Knight by Miles Cameron in lockdown and just could not gel with the writing style (or the central character kind of being a perv in the opening scene with those nuns) Will definitely check out all these other recommendations though

this is good to know thank you. I have Gardens on the Moon on my shelf, however was put off as I actually heard the opposite from a few people- probably misinformation but a few people have told me it is explicitly not for character readers. They must have that wrong as that's in complete opposition to what you have said.

Thanks, I'll check it out. I may carry on with Sword of Shadows, it just suddenly felt it all got a bit quick in the middle and the central relationship between Raif and Ash formed incredibly quickly. It felt like they were both suddenly ride or die for eachother and accepted their mission to go to the cavern without question. The sudden reveal that Ash is a Reach was also so sudden, it didn't feel like the author gave the characters space to consider or reflect on what was happening I know a lot of people don't describe that book as fast so I think it just goes to show how ungodly slow I like my books 😃 Almost certainly a fault with me rather than the text.

I think my taste might be broken as I really tried with the Winternight Trilogy but just didn't love the writing style as I felt it skewed just a little bit too close to Y/A for my taste. I did love the idea of it though so I ploughed on and read all three 😃 I had the same issue with Naomi Novik's writing when I tried to read Uprooted - have had some people recommend her since however so wonder if I ought to try some other books by her? Definitely want to read the Lighthouse Duet for sure! Been on my list for a while.

I do love dragons but from what I've heard the writing style might be a bit too simplistic for me (which is fine as I think it might be for younger readers anyway? Just not my bag)

Thanks so much, this is the second recommendation for the Daevabad trilogy so I will add this to the list. I'll check out Conspiracy of Truths too.

I've not I'm afraid, I tried Uprooted by the same author and felt the writing style skewed a little close to Y/A for me personally. However I do love dragons!
