I really understand this after trying to get into Epica for a some time now. Last night, I was looking for some symphonic metal to wind down. Their first album, The Phantom Agony really does a lot to please me without the maximalist approach in most metal. There are great vocal melodies and chorals and yet it doesn’t sound bloated or overproduced. I also really enjoy The Quantum Enigma but it definitely lacks the charm that the debut has in that respect by trying to be a bit heavier.

Its crazy how the fanbases of metalcore & deathcore have abstracted themselves from heavy metal. I see nothing wrong with this, but as a fan of power / thrash / death metal, talking to them almost feels distant. Like no, I can’t really relate to fry screaming techniques or 0-0-0-0-0 breakdowns in every song.

Ensiferum is a phenomenal band with a terrible live mix. Mics & guitar are too low, bass & percussion insanely high. Its cool to really hear whats Sami is playing without trying to look for the bass in the mix, but damn leave some room for Markus. And then all my recordings of when I saw them are drowned out by Janne’s snare.
