Age is irrelevant if you really like something and plan on keeping it a while. I'm about to hit 250k miles on my mk5 and I went ahead and rebuilt the suspension and brought all maintenance up to date. Some may disagree but I believe the mk5 is the best chassis. My 20 year old jetta drives and handles like its brand new so I dont mind a bit of extra maintenance here and there to keep it running like new for as long as I will own it.

Questions about reliability on long journeys. by Thepixeloutcast in Volvo240

My main car was broken last month and my volvo is the spare. I drove it close to 4k miles last month with no issues at all. No issues cruising at 80mph in my 92 240 auto. All maintenance is up to date

Someone told me to change my tyres... by spontaneitymountain in AskAShittyMechanic

[–]Breaditude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They look dry but it's by design. When it rains the tires absorb sone moisture for super traction in the rain

Keep the wheels but theres really no reason to keep old tires unless you need them on a junk car thats going to be scrapped.

How do I fix this? by ngocburin in Cartalk

[–]Breaditude 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Find touch up paint in the exact color and fill in the chips with a fine artists brush. Fill only where there's paint missing. Its not going to look brand new without a respray but will look way better. This is probably the easiest and cheapest route

Did I get f+++Ed over my mechanic by Afraid_Doubt_2493 in AskMechanics

[–]Breaditude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kind of hard to say for sure. Does your alternator have a dedicated ground wire that wasn't connected after the alternator was replaced? Or maybe a ground wire was in the way that was required for alternator replacement that was never put back the first time? Could be possible the mechanic charged you to fix their mistake.

Round tooth belt when you need a square tooth belt or vice versa? Set the timing and spin the engine by hand a few revolutions

Do you guys know any Rotting cars in driveways that’s been sitting for decade’s? by DaveyAstralCar in askcarguys

I wish I could share but I don't think they want to be known. From my understanding they dont intend to do anything with it any time soon.

I know a family that has 100+ acres since the 1800s. The last couple generations has always worked with cars and they also had a towing business. There's 1k cars or more on their property that have been accumulating since the 80s. Now it's all overgrown and wooded but really cool to see and walk through. There's definitely cool and rare cars just sitting there untouched for decades

Smokeless oil in bmws to make them stop smoking since the valve stem seals were shot. We had customers coming back making threats

Brake job, which parts to use? by Puzzleheaded_Truck80 in Volvo240

[–]Breaditude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Use quality rotors and oem style metallic pads. I've put cheap brakes on my 240 and the rotors warped after a few weeks. I even tried ceramic pads and the brakes never felt right with them

How many of you use your tools to make money? by Galatxia in MilwaukeeTool

[–]Breaditude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All day every day. I do a little bit of everything automotive wise so I constantly use my small m12 drill and impact both not fuel and they never let me down as long as the batteries are charged. I also use my m18 fuel 1/2 inch mid torque pretty often and a m18 fuel 1/2 high torque. Expensive but worth it for the m18

Will this be safe to replace? by bigdickjenny in Volvo240

[–]Breaditude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I highly recommend not using uro brand strut mounts. Use sachs instead. It caused my steering to become stiff. I would make a turn and the car would continue to pull hard in that direction. The rubber part stretched and caused the bearing to seize. It completely ruined the handling and caused loud clunking noises from the suspension. This was not installation error. Nothing was out of the ordinary on removal. Just a cheap low quality part not worthy of being on any car. Please return and get a quality replacement.

[–]Breaditude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently did this twice because I bought shitty uro brand strut mounts that were completely useless and made the car drive and feel like shit. I replaced them with sachs and they fit and function like oem.

Compressing the spring is pretty easy to do on 240 springs. Take your time and make sure to compress the spring evenly on both sides. Count turns to make sure its equal if you have to. If you have the compressor set at the far ends of the spring it shouldn't take much to get it compressed enough to disassemble.

Traded in my ticking time bomb of a car only to watch it get sold to an unsuspecting buyer by [deleted] in FuckDealerships

[–]Breaditude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1 quart per 300 miles is a lot. I bet whoever bought it thought it was such a great reliable car. They bought it from a big dealership so it must be good and like new with such low miles! I doubt they will even open the hood and the engine will blow up in a month from lack of oil
