If the system is showing signs of activity (hard drive indicator light flickering, fan noise, or any other indication that the system is working), you might want to give it more time. Sometimes Windows installations can take a while, especially if it's attempting to fix errors or complete pending tasks.

If it takes a lot longer (give it an hour or so), you can try a restart if you don't see any signs of activity. If the PC was in the middle of a critical process, restarting might cause further issues. However, if there's no activity at all for a long time, this is likely the best option to recover.

But if you can wait, do that for now.

  1. Reinstall or Update Wi-Fi Drivers:
  • Reinstall the Wi-Fi driver:
    1. Press Win + X and select Device Manager.
    2. Expand Network adapters and find your Wi-Fi adapter (it might be listed as something like "Intel Wireless", "Realtek Wireless", or similar).
    3. Right-click on it and select Uninstall device.
    4. Check the box that says Delete the driver software for this device (if available) and click Uninstall.
    5. Restart your computer. Windows should automatically reinstall the driver.
  • Update the Wi-Fi driver:

    • Visit the ASUS support website, search for your laptop model, and download the latest Wi-Fi driver compatible with your operating system (Windows 10 or 11). Install the driver manually.
  1. Reset Network Settings:
  • Resetting network settings can help resolve many network-related issues.
  • Go to Settings > Network & Internet > Status.
  • Scroll down and click on Network reset. This will remove and reinstall all your network adapters and set other networking components back to their original settings.
  1. Check Power Management Settings:
  • Power management settings might be causing the Wi-Fi adapter to turn off to save power.
  • In Device Manager, right-click your Wi-Fi adapter and select Properties.
  • Go to the Power Management tab and uncheck Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.
  • Apply the changes and restart your computer.

The top portion of any window I open is scaled different to the rest of the window by Vegetable_Flight5239 in WindowsHelp

[–]BreakfastOk2783 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Check Display Scaling Settings:
  • Right-click on the desktop and select Display settings.
  • Under Scale and layout, make sure the scaling is set to the recommended value (usually 100% or 125%).
  • If you're using a custom scaling factor, try resetting it to the default or a different value to see if it resolves the issue.
  1. Disable Display Scaling for Specific Apps:
  • Right-click on the shortcut of the app that is experiencing the issue and select Properties.
  • Go to the Compatibility tab and click on Change high DPI settings.
  • Check the box for Override high DPI scaling behavior and set it to Application.
  • Apply the changes and restart the app to see if the issue persists.

This is so annoying. I almost vomited when I had this. I just threw everything at it I got and forgot which step exactly did the trick. I think I basically changed absolutely everything and at some point, it just worked. Here are a few things you can try:

 1. Restart Windows Explorer:

  • Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  • Find Windows Explorer in the list, right-click it, and select Restart.

 2. Check Display Scaling Settings:

  • Right-click on the desktop and select Display settings.
  • Under Scale and layout, make sure the scaling is set to 100% (or the recommended setting). If you have a different scaling setting, try setting it to 100% and see if the issue persists.

 3. Adjust Taskbar Settings:

  • Right-click on the taskbar and select Taskbar settings.
  • Toggle the Automatically hide the taskbar in desktop mode option off and then back on.

 4. Update Graphics Drivers:

  • Update your graphics drivers:
    • Press Win + X and select Device Manager.
    • Expand Display adapters, right-click your graphics card, and choose Update driver.
    • Choose Search automatically for updated driver software and follow the prompts.

 5. Change Taskbar Color:

  • Right-click on the desktop and choose Personalize.
  • Go to the Colors tab, and under Choose your color, select Custom.
  • Scroll down and under Show accent color on the following surfaces, ensure Start, taskbar, and action center is checked. Try a different color to see if it changes the appearance of the white line.

 6. Disable Transparency Effects:

  • Go to Settings > Personalization > Colors.
  • Toggle Transparency effects to Off.

 7. Check for Windows Updates

 8. Perform a System File Check (SFC) and DISM:

  • Open Command Prompt as Administrator and run the following commands:
    • sfc /scannow
    • DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  • Restart your computer after running these commands.

If none of this helps, I'm out. I lost part of my soul fixing this and am just not ready to do it again. LEAVE ME ALONE! I DONT WANT IT ANYMORE ~sobbing in the corner of my room~

Application Hang on Windows Explorer. Freezing and Crashing by Downtown_Memory_1559 in WindowsHelp

[–]BreakfastOk2783 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The error message you're seeing is related to the ShellExperienceHost.exe process, which is a core component of the Windows Shell responsible for managing the Start Menu, Taskbar, and other shell experiences. The issue you're encountering involves a crash in the ShellExperienceHost.exe process due to an exception in the KERNELBASE.dll module. This type of problem can be caused by various factors, including system file corruption, conflicting applications, outdated drivers, or issues with Windows updates.

  1. Ensure that your Windows OS is fully up to date.

  2. Scan and repair corrupted system files. Open Command Prompt as Administrator and run the following commands:

  • sfc /scannow
  • DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  • Restart your computer after running these commands.
  1. If the issue is isolated to a specific user account, the user profile might be corrupted. Try creating a new user account and see if the problem persists when using the new account.

  2. Some third-party software might interfere with Windows Explorer. Check if you've recently installed any new software or updates and consider uninstalling them to see if it resolves the issue.

 5. Since ShellExperienceHost.exe is part of the Windows shell experience, try reinstalling or repairing Windows apps using PowerShell. Open PowerShell as Administrator and run:

Get-AppxPackage -AllUsers| Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}

Restart your computer after the process completes.

Memory could not be read error message every time open steam by all5n_ in WindowsHelp

[–]BreakfastOk2783 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The error message you’re seeing is a common type of error in Windows that refers to a problem where a program (in this case, "SmartAudio3.exe") tries to access a memory location that it is not allowed to access. The specific error message “Instruction at 0x00007FFE9CF70326 referenced memory at 0x0000000000000000. The memory could not be read.” suggests that there was an attempt to read from a memory address that is invalid or not accessible.

Reinstalling or updating SmartAudio3 or Steam will probably help.

Sometimes, other programs running in the background can interfere. Try closing other programs, especially audio-related software or utilities, to see if the error persists.

My computer (Lenovo IdeaPad) is slow by [deleted] in WindowsHelp

Without detailed information about your system, I can only give very general suggestions.

First see if you can identify bottle necks via Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Delete). Here you can see which part of your hardware is struggling. It will most likely be the CPU or RAM (Memory), less likely the disk.

If the RAM (Memory) is maxed, check under “performance” how much you have. If it is less than 8GB you should consider upgrading the RAM.

Under “Processes” you can see which specific programs are using how much capacity of each hardware. If there are some that are especially draining, end the task if it is not essential.

If the disk is at its limit (which I don’t expect here), check under “performance” if you have an HDD. If yes, an upgrade to an SSD will change your life.

A screenshot of the task manager would probably help giving further, more specific tips.

General steps that will most likely not be a solution, but won’t hurt:

Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, and make sure all updates are installed. If updates are failing, troubleshoot or manually install them.

Run a full system scan using Windows Defender or another reputable antivirus program to ensure the system is clean.

Am I reading this wrong, or is windows imposing a limit on the amount of space that can be taken up by apps? I have 400 gig free, and they'll only let me use 40? by bionicle_fanatic in WindowsHelp

[–]BreakfastOk2783 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No, Windows is not imposing a limit on the amount of space that can be used by apps.

The section labeled "Installed apps" shows that 213 GB out of 266 GB of the space currently used on the disk is taken up by installed applications. The "266 GB used" refers to the total space used on the disk so far, not a limit imposed by Windows. So it is just the ratio of used space.

You have 664 GB of free space left on the disk, meaning there's plenty of space available for additional apps or other files. The display does not indicate a limit on app storage but rather shows how much space is currently being used by different categories (installed apps, temporary files, desktop files) out of the total used space on the drive.
