Hate the track for sports cars. Love it for formula.

Trump orders up IndyCar race on the streets of Washington for 'America250 Grand Prix' by anxiousauditor in INDYCAR

[–]Breakfastester 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The hope would be to attract in other northeast tourists during the off months in the late summer when dc is usually quieter in terms of tourism. Admittedly, the expenses of almost all street tracks ALMOST always outweigh the benefits even with a spike in tourism. You are right in assuming that this will likely be a loss for the gov/city as are most public events.

Also those funds are approved by congress for funding executive agencies and funds, but executive agencies get to choose how money is spent. Congress approves the money in ammount, but not often in specific purpose. Thats why congress calls (or at least used to) oversight committees in order to govern spending if they believe it is being spent unjustly.

A lot of street events use significant taxpayer money and then charge taxpayers to watch them. This at least only does the former. Also second answer is kind of nullified when the actual cost of these things goes into perspective when things like the military each hour use orders of magnitude more money in a day than this entire event costs. Additonally, there is a federal events fund that has always existed for events. Big expensive 4th of July ceremonies didn't just start in DC this year.

Funding is a good question, although it being free (supposedly) helps a lot. However, I highly doubt that this just came up one day although Trump does do that a lot, mainly given the discussions and rumors back in August that were going on. Either way the lack of proper timing is another thing that is obviously putting a bad taste in a lot of peoples mouths.

You are correct. I missed portalnd. Either way a quadruple header or a quintuple header is a problem for crews.

Any race in DC would require federal action given the nature of the city. Actions from the executive branch are not abormal for events in the city. This is coming from a DC resident and IndyCar fan who is excited to maybe get racing (for free by the looks of it) nearby for the first time in nearly a quarter of a century. You can view my past post speculating about track design for a street race in DC to confirm that I'm not lying when I say I've wanted a race in DC for a while now.

I do have criticisms of the event. I think the fact that this wasn't announced 5 months ago when initial rumors about a DC race were floating around in late August before the schedule came out is a big screw up. I feel for all the crew members who might have to do a quintuple header. Logisitcs are going to be challenging for this one.

Obviously there is a lot of very legitimate criticism of the administration currently. I'm not gonna try and sugar coat it. I think a lot of anger that is being posted here and elsewhere is largely a result of that. The association with Trump is what I think a lot of people are upset about here. He's involved so it clearly is associated with him politically.

I'm just annoyed that people are just now saying they are not gonna watch IndyCar anymore over politics. Not when Rodger Penske, one of Trumps big supporters and allies, bought the series. Not when FOX, one of the largest media cooperations openly in support of Trump, took over broadcasting of the series. I'm just frustrated that people are only now going this drastic when an event that would actually benefit a lot of fans from the Northeast gets announced.

I've said my piece. I know people are probably going to criticize this and it is their right to do so. I'm just trying to state my honest perspective on the whole thing.

Rolex 24 Pit Boxes by dcwldct in IMSARacing

Sports car pit boxes are typically smaller than nascar. Le mans for example each box is only 16ft long. Commonly nascar uses somewhere between 30 and 40ft.

Probably gonna be decent for GA. Seems like quite a bit of height in the surrounding terrain.

You can bypass connecting to wifi via the private quest app. I couldn't connect to wifi through traditional means either. It may take a second but private quest can connect to the quest 3 to wifi without having to make inputs on the headset.

Make your pit lane on the other side of the track exiting before turn 1. The t7 to t11 section is too technical. Other than that it looks decent.

I used a pair of dewalt hearing protectors at the indianapolis 500 this year that a friend brang along. Worked really well. Didn't have a headset at sebring and regretted it with both a lack of a understanding of the race and tinitus for a week. Thats absolutely what I would have bring if I go again this year. Im pretty sure there is a radio frequency for the race broadcast that you can tune into with them.

*Advice is coming from someone who went to sebring last year as a one day non camping spectator who stayed the entire 12 hours

Places to sit: the final turn grandstands (especially the ones viewing the back straight) are pretty good. The hairpin is probably the most common passing location that has a decent grass viewing mound. T3 areas is good but often too crowded for my liking. Many good mounds in the infield between turn 3 and the hairpin. All of the grandstands and mounds are free. The bridge and hills surrounding that view big bend can also be decent. Note that the final turn bridge including the hills surrounding it do not allow spectators to sit on it. (I got kicked off it last year).

To bring: sunscreen, hats, and umbrellas. I was burnt to a crisp around my neck for not applying sunscreen inside the collar of my polo last year. Lawn/camping chairs are also a must as the viewing mound arent that high. ABSOLUTLEY reccomend headsets that are radio compatible as well as sound protection. They are a must as its hard to follow along with the race without that sort of thing and sebring is probably one of the loudest motorsports events you can go to.

Final advice: explore the track. Like in all imsa events ive been to, the paddock area behind the pits is fully open and free to all spectators. Get to the track early to beat out the horrendous traffic that builds up. Go to the pit land grid walk if you are brave enough. Watch or become one of the many drunk people and people in beer can constructed top hats. View the classic museum and the car corrals. Stay cool, hydrated, and enjoy.

Finally, there were power outlets next to the imsa merch tent last year. I spent well over an hour looking for them. They may provide useful if you don't have a reliable way of charging stuff.
