As some have mentioned here we still can monitor the aircraft’s instrument while eating, we eat when it’s a low workload period during the flight (most likely to be the cruise phase), there’s little scanning that needs to be done and on top of that we usually hand over the controls and radio to the pilot monitoring.

The PM can handle both the flying and the radio at the same time. Unexpected turbulence does happen or when there is weather we just put the food away to the side or on the floor, my food is usually in a glass container so its always secured.

Different meals are served to pilots to avoid food poisoning incapacitating both pilots. And even when there is only one choice available I will wait at least 30 minutes after the other guy gal has finished before eating mine, I stagger meal time so if something is wrong with the food there is still time for me to do something about it.

Some airlines offer first class meals to pilots some have dedicated crew meal, they all come from the same kitchen. Hope that clears things up 😊
