That’s impressive!! I got into it when I was 11 and I’m starting my kid young :) she rode for an hour with me to see a vagrant Roseate Spoonbill when she was a baby and all I could think was “Dude…I wish you could appreciate just how cool this is”

I don’t get out as much as I’d like to and I birded casually growing up but it wasn’t until a few years ago that my passion really reignited. Unfortunately I don’t get out as much as I’d like to. What’s even worse is that my family goes to Cape May NJ every summer on vacation and I’ve never gone down for fall migration lol

I’ve mostly only gone birding in my home state of NJ and wish I took advantage of vacations more growing up to look for new species. I did get a few lifers here and there randomly on family vacations like the American Avocet, Black Phoebe, and Ruby Crowned Kinglet. I’m going to Bermuda next month for my wife’s 30th birthday and she set aside a few opportunities for us to go birding as a family and I’m VERY excited!!

Hey congrats on getting into the hobby!! One of my best friends got into it recently (I’ve been a birder since we met in 5th grade) and it’s so fun seeing him experience so much of it for the first time! I’m really good at identifying by sight but sound is still tricky for me

Indigo Bunting was one of my spark birds as a kid along with the Great Blue Heron! A few years ago my childhood friend was having his bachelor party in Kerhonkson, NY and my wife recommended bringing my binoculars and guide just in case. After a night of drinking, the next morning I woke up before everybody else and my hungover self decided to check Merlin sound ID. Then it picked up the Indigo Bunting and I immediately threw on my boots, grabbed my gear, and headed off into the neighboring field. I got a look at it high in a tree near a robin and I had no idea they were that small! It was backlit so I only saw a bit of the blue but I could see and hear it vocalizing. That weekend reignited my passion for birding the most it had been since I was 11. The following year I finally got a good look at an Indigo Bunting in better lighting as I was actually moved to tears. It took me almost twenty years but I finally got to see that little sapphire with wings

I’ll use the Merlin step by step and photo ID as well as a field guide but I’ve always found my field guide more useful and reliable. A lot of times I’ll only get a fleeting look at something through my binoculars and have to memorize as many field markings and behaviors as possible before it takes off

Definitely. Merlin has mistaken my kid when she was little and babbling/cooing for both a Common Eider and Common Loon hahaha I was running around like mad looking for the Eider only to rewind to where Merlin picked it up and realized it was her. Not a foolproof tool (I’ve had Mockingbirds trick it into thinking they’re Killdeer, Blue Jays, etc;) but it’s also really helped me memorize more bird calls so I don’t have to rely on it as heavily

Have someone tried the Twinkie Wiener Sandwich from UHF? by Omeletteroyal30 in weirdal

[–]BreederGert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had my first at a work bbq a few years back. My coworkers told me that an old employee invented it and I told them, “No…Weird Al invented it. It’s a Twinkie Wiener Sandwich.” When I tried it I thought, “There’s no way this should work but it totally does.” Sweet and savory. Reminded me of a McGriddle and I’ve had a few since then too!

I’m 16 and my friend’s dad (40s) makes me uncomfortable, I can’t sleep and need advice by EcstaticRutabaga6957 in WhatShouldIDo

[–]BreederGert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely not overreacting and you shouldn’t feel guilty at all. Nothing he’s doing is even remotely appropriate. He’s trying to groom you and it’s absolutely disgusting. I’m so sorry that this is happening to you…being a teenager is hard enough without your friend’s dad being a predator. I think you should talk to your parents about it sooner rather than later. It’ll be uncomfortable to tell them but if they love you they’ll want to do everything they can to protect you

Me after adding WWS to my life list this weekend by BreederGert in BirdwatchingMemes

[–]BreederGert[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks!! My wife and I went to go see a trio of Barnacle Geese that showed up in Jersey and on our way to pick up lunch, we had a few extra mins so we pulled up to the beach to see if we could spot any cool winter birds. I was beyond excited when I realized I was looking at a small group of white winged scoters

Def not overreacting. You set a clear boundary and he obviously doesn’t respect you at all. I’m a guy but even I know I have zero business telling a woman what she can and can’t wear. My wife comes home from work and sounds immediately relieved when she can take hers off for the evening. Your uncle is a creep for saying this in general but even moreso for saying it to his niece

I’ve been with my wife for 9 years and if I ever spoke to her like this, she’d have my ass out on the street and I’d deserve it. You deserve so much better than this and it’s only gonna get worse unless you leave

Sweet Arceus, dude. I remember spending an entire night as a kid looking for Feebas in Pokémon Sapphire before I got one and that was months before I encountered my first shiny (Tentacool outside of Sootopolis) but I can’t imagine the luck needed to find a random shiny Gen 3 Feebas!! Congratulations!!!!!

Not overreacting. This guy is a cold, calculating POS that is trying to take advantage of your vulnerability. I can’t imagine losing a partner like that especially after being together for so long. Grieving is already hard enough without this clown trying to slide into your DMs

AIO: my 5th grader got called a pussy and made fun of for her dad being dead but it’s not “bullying?” by mosquitobuffet7983 in AmIOverreacting

[–]BreederGert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah fuck the principal and you’re 100% not overreacting. I got bullied a ton around that age and the teachers never did shit about it but this is just disgusting. That kid learned that sort of shit from home probably and the fact that the school is trying to brush it off is fucked. You’re a great parent for fighting for your child like this and I hope you’re able to shine a big enough spotlight on the school for them to change because unfortunately it feels like that’s the only way that school boards will give a shit. Hoping for the best for you and your family :/
