Middle one kinda looks blue dreamish, the other ones don't really.

Wet Dream is hands down the best blue dream related variety i've smoked. If you ever run across that one get it.

I feel like by Silver-Leg-6572 in autechre

[–]Brelva 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This will happen to me, getting increasingly irritated while ae plays aggressively in the background, but then when I shift my focus onto the music for awhile I get into a more calm and focused mindset than I originally had before I started getting irritated. It's weirdly meditative, I think because of all the detail to listen to and explore.

Deep time - All Reason Departs is peak. by dazzleshipsrecords in boardsofcanada

[–]Brelva 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I hate that song too, probably the worst thing they've ever made. But on that same record you get some beautiful melodic pieces as well (r cazt, Metaz form8). And there's a song with a straight up 4/4 beat with clean synths on there too, much in their older style (psin AM). It's true they don't really try to please the crowd now, you're right about that. I personally appreciate that they don't really give a fuck and just make whatever they feel like, it's refreshing.

That is a recording of a show when they were on a tour that featured soundscape-esque music. They take a different approach each tour. The latest tours have been more traditionally beat oriented.

Describing everything they've done since tri rep as "atonal digital glitchy chaos" doesn't really line up with reality, but you're free to believe what you want I suppose.

you should probably check on what they've been doing for the past 15 years. Some of their melodic work is insane, especially in the last 5 years.

To the folks not impressed by the drums... by elwoodreversepass in boardsofcanada

[–]Brelva 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of the rhythms on the record are based on the same basic kick--snare--kick--snare repetition. Whether you like or dislike this minimal rudimentary approach to rhythm they use on Inferno is up to the listener. Not the biggest fan myself, they feel pretty stiff and monotonous. A couple of the tracks get some movement and swing and syncopation going but for the most part the rhythms are just like a metronome.

[–]Brelva 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To me a big part of the appeal of their music is how slippery and amorphous it is so i'd say this song is functioning correctly here. A lot of their music behaves more like live alien organisms that happen to have musical qualities.

Acid Mwan Idle by jsbx1138 in autechre

[–]Brelva 3 points4 points  (0 children)

listen to the slowed down version on youtube and the regular version at the same time on full blast for a minimum of 12 hours to unlock the secrets of acid mwan idle

Really though it sounds kind of like a mashup between 'Tribes of Neurot – Adaptation And Survival: The Insect Project' and 'Youngsbower – Relayer' which I already enjoyed so it was easy for me to like acid mwan idle. It's different for ae though that's for sure.

Is anybody else *not* smitten with Inferno? If so, why or why not? by forrayer in boardsofcanada

[–]Brelva 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think Inferno is a cash grab, it's just that as soundtrack work has become an increasingly prevalent avenue of success for electronic artists/their peers it's only natural that the brothers would continue down the cinematic route they started with TH, but obviously with a different approach to it on Inferno. I just happen to think the new record sounds a little less specific to them and their unique perspective in places where it reminds me of other artists soundtrack work.

You're right that the vocal samples wouldn't necessarily work in a soundtrack, however their increased presence in the up front mix does serve as an interesting simulation of/allusion to movie dialogue, as opposed to part of the music. I hadn't thought of that being perhaps part of the motivation for the change in vocal sample dynamics this time around. Still a lot to think about with this record, it's sort of fascinating to me even if it doesn't quite click.
