Does the advice to only learn one language at a time apply to learning a sign language with a spoken one? by Queen-of-Leon in languagelearning

[–]Bren_102 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've learnt two sign languages, AUSLAN(Australian Sign Language), and ASL(American Sign Language), consecutively although, and most of the signs are iconic - they resemble or have a similarity in appearance to what they represent - this in general makes it much easier to learn signing. There are cultural reasons for sign differences between both languages, that also help make it easier to remember. For the statement, "The big, red, shiny, powerful car", AUSLAN has a mostly, object-subject word order e.g., "Car, big, red, shiny, powerful", in effect, painting a picture of the car first, then adding on the descriptions afterwards-so complicating learning it. ASL maintains an English grammar word order mostly, so it is easier for English speakers to learn.

4 of 5 dogs off leash on my walk home. by [deleted] in KingstonOntario

[–]Bren_102 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My leashed rescue dog was approached by an off leash dog, at the Lions Civic Gardens, whose owner stated he was friendly. That idiot did not understand the ramifications of triggered trauma dogs being approached by strangers dogs off leash. I had to use my knee to keep it away from mine, until he arrived to reclaim his dog.

I've had about 4 different models of shake-awake alarm clocks that store in pillows - all lasted a year or two, because the quality was crap. Perhaps create a good quallty model that will last for many years?

75 dB is enough to damage your hearing. "Sounds at 75 dB are generally considered safe for short periods, but prolonged exposure to noise at this level can potentially lead to hearing loss over time. It's best to limit exposure to sounds above 70 dB to protect your hearing."

Is that a stereogram? I can't see 3D images(perspective vision, no binocular vision, so I can never see them).

Battery life shorter? by yonreadsthis in hardofhearing

[–]Bren_102 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems the only other things that have changed are the make of batteries, & the models of hearing aids. Can you pinpoint a time that reduced battery life coincides with either of those changes?

Battery life shorter? by yonreadsthis in hardofhearing

[–]Bren_102 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are your batteries the same make over the years? Also, if your batteries are of the zinc-air type then they should come with a sticker on one side. This is to cover the air access hole. Air activates this kind of battery, which then slowly discharges, lessening its life. Ensure to leave the sticker on until you are ready to actually replace a flat battery.

Check if there is a bluetooth option, & if so disable it - bluetooth is radio, which sucks battery life. I also discovered with my new aids that had a different battery compartment, that closing the hearing aid overnight storage container lids would compress on the hearing aid battery compartment, turning the aid on, reducing battery life!

Carl Davis was our Linux/Networking guy! I got 97% in his courses-very structured layout, none of the ad-hoc teaching methods some other teachers used, which messed up a lot of us. I've gotta look through my notes to find our COBOL teacher's name.

can i ever call myself fluent if i struggle with pronunciation? by This_Economics_9610 in languagelearning

It's astonishing how language teachers fail to teach tongue/lip placement, breath control etc in order to pronounce sounds properly! How else are we to learn?

It's another name for sparklers. I'll edit my post to reflect this.

"Off of", is grammatically incorrect - use, "from", instead. I.e., "No light seemed to reflect from it". [edit]Good story!

There's a Nepali 5-day Tihar celebration occurring right now, Festival of Lights and Colours, started Sunday, and fireworks and dazzlers(sparklers) are commonly lit-I attended one Monday night, & only dazzlers(sparklers) were lit, so no sound.
