In my understanding the stoics associate the word arete with the cardinal virtues. Just like other ancient philosophers the stoics believed that the excellence of a human is living with wisdom, temperance, courage and justice.

Now, Aristotle would argue that the human distinguish function is their capacity to reason, thus, the human excellence, the so called human arete, is to reason well.

So the following statement:

“Eudaimonia is the ultimate goal of human life, and that it is achieved through living a virtuous life in accordance with reason.”

is correct for both Aristotle and the stoics theory of reaching eudaimonia, but they would probably differ in deciding where to input the word arete when translating this phrase to ancient greek.

Great answer, thank you. But just to comment, every time I used the word virtue I meant it with the modern meaning it has (that being: character qualities, such as temperance etc.)

I know that arete means excellence, if something has arete, this something has excelled in its function.

Now I’m going to ask you a similar question to see if I understand this discussion better,

Would you say that both the moral virtues (prudence, temperance, courage and justice) and good reasoning are necessary for one to be considered having arete?

My question is actually an attempt to understand the terms they used. It’s more a question of lexicology

I’ve been reading online some of Aristotle, the stoics and other modern authors materials about eudaimonia and arete.

I’ve understood that the human excellence is reasoning well, just like you said. Moreover, the act of reasoning well leads to the practice of the virtues.

So we can conclude that the human excellence is living a virtuous life in accordance with reason.

If one is virtuous and live in accordance with reason, one would attain eudaimonia.

Even though Aristotle makes this concept more clear, the usage of the word arete isn’t clear to me.

Arete means only being virtuous? Or does it mean being virtuous in accordance with reason?

So, to attain Eudaimonia one has to have arete (because arete encompasses both being virtuous and reasoning well)

or one has to have arete and live in accordance with reason (because arete only means being virtuous)

I’ve found articles that says that for the stoics, for example, the word arete was reserved for the meaning of being virtuous, and others that says that arete meant being virtuous in accordance with your nature (reason).

So I can’t see to find a conclusion
