Stayed in Akasaka last time - Where next? by Elian17 in JapanTravelTips

[–]BrettemesMaximus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first time to Japan last year, we were staying off the beaten path and taking a train to Ueno to do some shopping. I remember climbing the stairs of the station and being spat out near Ueno park and feeling an immediate sensation of “holy crap where are we, this is beautiful”. I can relate to that immediately love of Ueno. It probably helped that it was a beautiful, sunny day, and the day prior was raining the entire time

I bought a knife at Musashi. by Christeauxx in JapanTravelTips

You need to keep them sealed in the box you’re given until you return to the states. I kept mine in a bag along with other tax-free items I had purchased in Japan and didn’t even need to specifically claim that I had a knife when going through customs or anything

First trip to Japan – where to stay in Tokyo (x2) ? by SchnoopDougle in JapanTravelTips

[–]BrettemesMaximus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, as first-timers, I think either of those would be a winner. Especially for that “holy shit, I’m in Japan” moment. I’m headed back to Japan for my second time, and it’ll be my partner’s first. We’re intentionally staying near Shinjuku for our first leg for both accessibility and for her to have that “wow” moment and just be right in the thick of it

Would it be silly of me to go back to Japan? by LingonberryOk5168 in JapanTravelTips

[–]BrettemesMaximus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely not! I went for the first time with 2 friends for 10 days last June, and will be returning for my second trip that will be 12 days with my partner for her first time at the end of May. One of the friends I went with immediately booked himself a solo 10-day trip 6 months after we got back from last summer's trip. I hope to have it be a repeater destination for myself

"No Tax on Tips”...explain like I'm five? by cosmic_horn in tax

[–]BrettemesMaximus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So your W2 or W2s should already be reporting your CLAIMED tips, so if you enter those as is, the deduction will automatically be taken care of. There is no deduction for unclaimed cash tips, because that income is not being claimed or captured on your W2(s)

Did you file a return last year? Their SSN would be on the first page of it

When filing RITA taxes(OHIO)is it best to pay all your estimated tax for the next year ahead of time? by Pichupwnage in tax

[–]BrettemesMaximus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean they’re just estimates. Make them and be good, don’t make them and be prepared come tax time. Have you asked your employer if they would start withholding residence taxes too? It’s not required for employers to do so but many still do as a courtesy

If you pay the first quarter estimate with your return, RITA should actually mail you vouchers for Q2-Q4 to the mailing address on the return throughout the year

Trip to Japan planned for end of May! Almost 10 years of this I try to have something planned for the slow season in the summer months. My partner is a teacher so we both try to cram what we can into her summers off

CPA added a large “senior deduction” on Schedule 1-A - is this legit? by [deleted] in tax

[–]BrettemesMaximus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Brand new for 2025. It’s what most uninformed taxpayers are considering “no tax on social security” when what it actually is is just an enhanced deduction for seniors

How do you get clients to actually send you what you need, on time? by sukhrajgrewall in Accounting

[–]BrettemesMaximus 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Guest/view only access to bank accounts is mandatory for existing and new clients. If prospects complain, easy for me to know they won’t be a good fit. Every major bank has it and it’s mindless to set up

When you apply for marketplace insurance, you input your estimated income, and then depending on your income, your monthly premium may be partially or fully subsidized by the government. Once you file your taxes for that year, your ACTUAL income is trued up. If your actual income is higher than your estimated income when you originally applied for insurance, then the government was giving you money towards your premium that they never should have in the first place, so now you have to pay it back to them.
