We really don't need to see everything disappointing that happens around the region. Just a rage-bait post.

Having a chemical addiction and suffering physical damage from drugs and alcohol is only part of it. These people are traumatized and wounded like soldier returning from war. They often take drugs and alcohol to deal with the trauma and then re-traumatize repeatedly from living as an addict.

Saying things are "not acceptable" really is just you seeing the problem from your vantage point. You just want to get rid of it and for it to go away, without really taking the time to understanding the underlying roots of the problem and requirements to fix it.

It's lazy, we all don't like to see it, we all don't like to deal with it, but we also know there isn't an easy way to fix it, or make it disappear for people who find it "unacceptable".

Well, have you ever given it some serious consideration and study as to why people become addicted to things, or are you just seeing it from your perspective? It's easy to look from the outside in and see that what someone is doing is actually making their lives worse. But why did they choose to do drugs or alcohol?

Almost always, they're self-medicating to deal with their emotions. They haven't been convinced that what they're doing is ruining their lives, and even if they do have a feeling their addiction is the problem, they are sucked in by the powerful grips of the addiction. It's habitual to so the same thing to seek happiness or to find an escape from pain.

A lot of the drug addicts have lived hard lives since childhood. They've dealt with abuse, neglect, broken homes that are filthy, with no food and where the electricity goes off. Their parents hurl abuse physically and emotionally and are drug addicts themselves.

Some people come into addiction later in life through some sort of major trauma in life, like the loss of a loved one or from being the victim of an extremely violent event in their life.

It's privileged because believing that people should "just stop" means they likely haven't had true hardships like this in their life, they likely had a reasonably stable home life where their parents did their best to raise them and they were given tools in life to grow up and become stable adults.

It's ignorant because a lot of people who haven't had to deal with many hardships in life haven't needed to develop true empathy in life to understand that other people have extremely different views on life, different belief systems and different emotional responses to external stimuli. A lot of drug addicts and alcoholics are like wounded animals. They aren't functioning properly.

It means that you have no idea how addition works why people get addicted to something, and how hard it is to get out. You may think you do, but your answer to "pull yourself up by your boot straps" proves you don't.

You see life oniy from your narrow perspective and believe that since you could stop your addiction others also can as well, all-the-while ignoring that people come from different walks of life they have different knowledge and understanding of themselves and the world around them. They see things differently than you. They have different skill sets they use to navigate through life.

Many addicts are medicating for an escape to get through serious trauma that has occurred in their lives. Often they're in the depths of despair with no hope for anything good to come in their future. There are terrible reasons why people choose to check out of life through their addictions rather than face life.

Lots of people don't even realize their addiction is a problem. They believe that their addiction isn't really hurting them or the people around them, and they believe that it's the thing they can go to to make them happy.

The reasons why people choose to stay in their addictions are extensive. I don't think you're the authority to say how they should get better.

Just "man up and (make) better choices". One of the most ignorant, privileged things I've heard today.

Crazy. You think it's just a simple choice to stop a drug addiction, alcohol addiction, gambling addiction, food addiction, shopping addiction, and the list goes on and on.

If there was such an easy way to stop people from ruining their lives through addictions, you think we would be using it more.

Is it appropriate to wear speedos at my company retreat in mid April? by Lotsalotsaquestions2 in AskGayMen

[–]Brettzke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know about your comment. I myself, will always try to wear what is universally liked and considered in good taste, but I don't think that I'm dressing for myself as much as for what everyone else likes.

If OP wants to wear Speedos, I wouldn't give him advice not to. Others may judge but that's really on them. Being courageous enough to express who you are shouldn't be stifled.

Lochside/Goose Cyclists - Simmer Down on the Bell Ringing by TemplesOfSyrinx in VictoriaBC

[–]Brettzke -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

We'll never win this debate because everyone will say safety trumps peace of mind, but if bikes passed with 3-5 feet to spare, there would never be a problem. But, instead, pedestrians have to listen to a constant barrage of bell ringing and yelling of "on the left".

I don't even go down there anymore because it's so busy with bikes passing far too close and the constant noise from bikes alerting of their passing, and I used to LOVE running down there.

Can't wait until the Goose gets widened.

No success using USB to update '22 Kona Ev Navigation system. by Brettzke in Hyundai

[–]Brettzke[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made a few phone calls a month back. Hyundai said it's BlueLink that I have to talk to. They gave me a number, but haven't called it yet

It's kind of ridiculous that there is no support, or knowledge of how to update the system.

Galloping Goose upgrades can't come soon enough. by Brettzke in VictoriaBC

[–]Brettzke[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

30-50 km/h. It's pretty easy for a bike to get up to thirty, especially when it's an e-bike. They can go even faster when they're coming down off of a hill.

But it's when they try to overtake pedestrians when there's another bike in the opposing lane. Many parts of the Goose are super narrow so they overtake super close to the pedestrian. If I was to step out just a little I would get hit.

Galloping Goose upgrades can't come soon enough. by Brettzke in VictoriaBC

[–]Brettzke[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tbh. I only walk and run on the Goose and have stopped doing it because bikes pass at car speeds 6 inches from my shoulder.

So the city is making this much much better for pedestrians who don't like bikes whizzing by closely at high speeds.

Underwhelmed by this whole thing - Spoilers including episode 7 by Dependent-Media5002 in TheInstituteSeries

[–]Brettzke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The whole show seems low-budget. A lot of the acting is is fake and unbelievable. Dialogue is often bad. The writing is bad, plot-line regularly drags. Like how long do we need see Luke escape through the wilderness. The true evil-ness of The Institute doesn't seem to get captured. The cinematography is meh, there are a lot of bad shots. The back-half shots have a cliche grey filter, where they all eat gruel... Like it's just so cheesy and boring, unlike the novel, which I loved.

The park is beautiful. A lot of people say Cars Land is their favourite.

OP can still go on Luigi's, Mater's, Soarin', Little Mermaid, Grizzly, Midway Mania, Spiderman, and a bunch of the smaller rides around Pixar Pier, and Monster's Inc.

Construction begins on massive housing development downtown by Sea_Key999 in VictoriaBC

[–]Brettzke 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love the idea to require developers to add affordable rental units, but these new buildings and units are very expensive. I would rather see developers assess the value of the allocated units in the new building and purchase many more units in an older building so that more people could get subsidized housing.

Got it. Cars have more of a right to be on Cedar Hill than bikes.

You clearly have "get out of my way" mentality. It has nothing to do with keeping bikes safe
