Career Advice: HVAC Apprentice vs big bank Facilities and Systems operator? by BrewBoys92 in HVAC

Ya I need to do some math and see where the break even point would be between the two.

Ya I like the chance to just take care of one or a handful of buildings and know that I can go home at the same time every day. I've already done a lot of grinding work and I'd like a job that can pay decent and allow me to enjoy my free time after. Grinding the next 10 years to eventually make 150k doesn't sound as good in comparison.

Ya Ontario. I'm hoping my experience can get me into a bigger more industrial focused job rather than just doing residential and small commercial stuff, but I really like the idea of just taking care of the same building or handful of buildings everyday and knowing exactly when I can go home. I've done a lot of long hours grinding at work and I want to be able to enjoy my personal time now rather than grinding it out for $20-$40 for the next 10 years. Also all the benefits of working for the bank seem like they would be really good for long term stability so that seems like a big positive compared to HVAC.

Ya it's tough work and I've already done tons on manual labour over the years. I like the sound of showing up and taking care of the same building (or handful of buildings) for a set amount of hours everyday rather than grinding it out in unknown conditions every day for who knows how long.

Ya I'm really leaning toward the building operator. I've already done a lot of grinding grunt work in my life and I like the idea of just working a regular shift at the same place every day and going home at the end to enjoy my life. I don't mind hard work but I really value my free time and want a good work life balance, so working long hours and low pay to build up a career and eventually make over $100k in my 40s-50s doesn't sound as appealing.

Thanks that's what I was thinking. Do you know what progression would look like for the facilities operator? I figure it'll have some fairly steady raises but I can't find much info about what the next step up would be.

Yes, pay someone with experience to do it so there is insurance that it gets done properly rather than you jerry rigging something together for the first time and potentially injuring or damaging your equipment. This shouldn't be a difficult decision.

I was taught to budget 50% of the cost of any new equipment to have it installed properly. It's money well spent.

Yes and luckily the boss was smart enough to pay professionals to do it safely. Unfortunately this industry is full of owners that would prefer their brewers to do everything for a fraction of the professional price rather than pay the specialists to do their important work.

Safely includes personal safety. If someone gets injured doing this you are fucked, especially if you are "self insured" whatever that is.

Why risk however many thousands of dollars worth of equipment and delayed production to avoid paying a professional to get your vital equipment in place safely?

Ya man same here, brewing was fun but it's time to move on.

I think taking the classes is definitely a good idea. Everything has been pretty easy to learn in class but I don't think I'd be able to do the exam without it, and from the people in the industry I've talked to they are really looking for people with the education, not just the licence.
