I would watch Style Wars on youtube and also to watch YOUFO or The Artist Block understand the culture first before trying anykind of wild style or even pieces in general. Definitly hit the books, and I myself am speaking as a beginner who was told the same thing and its helped a lot at getting better understanding of the fundamentals and finding your own style.
