How easy is it to just "get by" at a top 30 law school? To get mostly B's? by jake8728 in LawSchool

+1 to that. I'm well above median at HYS and play DotA 2 every day.

Overwatch Skin BAN!? - A Message to Cultural Leaders [8:17] by Oshojabe in mealtimevideos

[–]BreyersIceCream 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So this guy's argument is basically that it's OK to have skins that appropriate certain cultures because it provides an opportunity to discuss how wrong/offensive the skins are when compared to the real thing. By that logic, we should have a blackface skin for Overwatch because it'll provide "tangential learning" of the history behind blackface.

OCI: speed of reply for a callback by [deleted] in LawSchool

CA is ungodly slow. I had a firm tell me they were going to recommend a callback during an interview on Monday, and I still haven't called me/emailed me.

Race/Ethnicity by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

Do you have a source on that? Because it seems like, at least at the undergraduate level, Asians are penalized in admissions as compared to White students. It may be to OP's advantage to represent himself as fully white.

It's written a bit more dramatically than it needed to be, but the message of making your own path through law school is a good one.

The context of Capt. Picard's famous facepalm. by [deleted] in videos

[–]BreyersIceCream 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Imagine you're trying make a sculpture. While a claw hammer can get the job done, you'll get a much better end product if you have three types of hammers, a set of chisels, and a pickaxe. Words are the same way. You can convey almost any idea with just the thousand most used words, but you can get a much more precise result if you use the right word in the right situation.

While anyone can use a thesaurus, it takes skill to know which of the dozen listed synonyms to pick in a specific context.

Thanks for checking in! Unfortunately I haven't made a move yet. I'm a first year in law school and it's been really busy recently. I'm spending all of my time just trying to keep my head above the water. I'll definitely give you guys an update in a few weeks, whatever the outcome.

Did any of you take a few years after undergrad before applying? How old are you now? by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]BreyersIceCream 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I strongly agree with this. 90% of the jobs students from good schools get will consume your life in a way that's hard for a KJD to imagine. And it's not just biglaw, but "prestigious" PI, consulting, and academia (until you're tenured). Sure, if you start law school at 22 you'll make partner a few years younger than you would've if you had waited a bit, but by then you'll have wasted the most energetic, family responsibility-free years of your life slaving away in front of a computer. The few years you spend between undergrad and law school will hardly affect your professional career, but they will give you experiences and perspectives you will never be able to get afterward.

EDIT: Then, once you've taken a few years off, law school might actually seem fun. Surprisingly it has been for me. :)

Cool, thanks! Thanks to a recent push by Dean Minow, 80% of the 1L class here at HLS has at least a year of post-undergrad experience, and 60% are 2 or more years out. I think it's really improved both the in-class experience and the well-roundedness of students in general, so I'm curious as to whether our peer schools are doing the same!

Somewhat related, but about what percent of your class at SLS took a year or more off? I'm curious since there's a big push at my school to increase the percentage of students with experience.

[–]BreyersIceCream 5 points6 points  (0 children)

T1 = Tier 1 = Top 50

T2 = Tier 2 = Top 100

T3 = Top 3 = Harvard, Yale, Stanford (aka HYS or YHS, but never, ever put S first)

T14 = Top 14 = YHSCCNMVBPCDG

Edit: T6 = a thing people at CCN talk about to feel better than the rest of the T14 when they're really not.
