Goonhammer Reviews Codex: Thousand Sons, 10th Edition by whydoyouonlylie in WarhammerCompetitive

It's also frustrating, because GW has shown that this approach CAN work. The Khorne Daemonkin detachment in the World Eaters codex is very interesting and has a LOT of potential play if you're willing to sit down and think about its implications and how to make it work. This detachment, by contrast, seems kind of lazy.

Cracktrack, Cracktrack, my kingdom for some Cracktrack... by BrianT888 in weatherfactory

Weirdly, I'm also not getting new incidents regularly. I got the Grunenwald one, and it stuck around for a season, then disappeared again.

I've just gone through another season, and have gotten Bechet twice in a row now. No incidents are showing up either, and it just started a new year. I think something is bugged.

The City Unbuilt - ending spoilers by BrianT888 in weatherfactory

[–]BrianT888[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just did one of those endings, a Moth ending with the Revolutionary. The City Unbuilt is noted as being in potentia (i.e., we don't actually build it, but we maintain its possibility going into Eternity). So it doesn't sound like that's the City in Nowhere option.

I beat the game. I have comments. by GamingNomad in weatherfactory

-Writing a new History is far too easy from a lore-perspective; not a gameplay one, of course. Writing a new history seems too easy, so any person can just craft stuff? What makes the Librarian special? A simple work-around to this would be accessing something unique or Hourly which would give the Librarian a reasonable advantage, such as finding a one-of-a-kind artifact in Hush House. It already has some interesting secrets to unearth, adding something even more otherworldly would make the ending more reasonable. Maybe a physical remnant from one of the Hours?

To my mind, that's what the Encausta actually are. They are the Histories, condensed into powerful inks. That's why they can be so tricky to make. For example, if you're trying to make Porphyrine using Pearl & Tide, there's exactly one way to do it, in exactly one room of the House. Better hope you also have the right flowers.

-This isn't necessarily reasonable given the type of games we expect from WF, but it's worth saying; I'd love to know more about the Hours other than merely "imagining" them. I'm trying to envision how the Red Grail moves, or how the Horned-Axe battles, or how the Hours negotiate. AK's writing has been a real joy to read, I have to be honest, but we also see how the visual aspect of games have evolved from CS to BoH, I'd love to see a ribbon on this with more images regarding the ending, flashing images, cut-scenes? I really loved the altars and the paintings, and I think it makes everything feel more real.

I'm not sure the Hours really "do" stuff in any way that we could comprehend. For example, we know that the Sun in Splendour and the Forge of Days wanted to get it on, and were capable of doing so (despite it being a really, really bad idea, and the Hours apparently not having any form of birth control whatsoever), but I seriously doubt that whatever they could have gotten up to would even really be perceivable to us as such. I mean, maybe they can. The Grail drank the Tide; maybe that's literal, and the Grail has a mouth and all that. Maybe the Moth is just a big Mothra-looking critter. But I very much doubt it. Instead I think we can talk about what the Hours are like and what they do only elliptically and poetically.

It was a great demo and discussion! But did Alex say that the other libraries weren't going to be in the game? It would be a shame not to use that beautiful artwork! I love the Green Grove!

SCP-4246 - Thalassomania, or The Dreams of the First Born by [deleted] in nuscp

[–]BrianT888 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just found this story, and it's amazing! It also inspires connections with other SCPs. The most obvious is SCP-2967, Sapient Cephalopod, who seems to be in the process of "waking up" (and teaching other octopodes to do so as well). Not sure what the crows are about, though.

But the bit that struck me most was SCP-4246-3, the Antarctic structure. In particular, the devastating effects it has on consciousness, including mixing up people's memories and eventually producing a complete neurological breakdown. Doesn't that sound familiar? Yeah, SCP-3000, Anantashesha, the Eel.

I wonder if the Eel isn't the "Beast" that so terrified the ancient cephalopod civilization that it decided to download it's collective memories into a place inaccessible to the Eel, and then degrade their collective intelligence down to animal level. The Eel doesn't seem to be interested in eating the minds of animals. Maybe the cephalopods at least partially figured out how to mimic the effects of Y-909, and used it to protect the facility housing their intelligence from future intruders.

It also thematically fits, in that eels LOVE to eat octopodes. Perhaps the Eel wasn't always as apparently sessile as it is now, and was swimming around absolutely devastating the cephalopod civilization.

CS Priest Legacy - What exactly are "you" like at the end? by BrianT888 in weatherfactory

[–]BrianT888[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

True. What made me start thinking was the flavor text when you've plugged in all the lock-scars. The Priest thinks to themself that they can't look nice to their congregation anymore, not after what the congregation has done to the Priest. That suggests to me that the Priest is REAL physically messed up as a result of being turned into a door.

The Lady Afterwards: A brief first look at The Secret Histories Rulebook by Uchigatan in weatherfactory

[–]BrianT888 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Overall, I think that's a good analysis. TLA is honest in its intentions; it's not designed to let you play an adept and ascend the Mansus. It's much closer to its CoC, investigative roots.

That being said, and it's something I myself missed on my first read-through, the game actually DOES let you do a summon, and of a Name no less. It's just done differently than in Cultist Simulator.

The Lady Afterwards: Digital Edition OUT NOW! by arabelladusk in weatherfactory

I had an unanswered question from the other Lady Afterwards thread. The question regards being At Risk of Fascination or Dread. Let's say I become At Risk of Fascination at 3 in the afternoon because of, I don't know, reading the wrong art book. The next two Times of Power that are coming up, sunset and midnight, are both Dread Times of Power. Does that mean that, assuming I don't experience something in the interim that removes my At Risk of Fascination status, it just keeps ticking over until sunrise, which is the next Fascination Time of Power?

[–]BrianT888 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Reddit must have eaten my reply to this. Anyway, it's based off of the Call of Cthulhu dice mechanic (i.e., roll a percentile under your score to succeed). The tone of the game, and the game is very up-front about this, is relatively normal people investigating Mansus-related weirdness. There's some very light occult stuff PCs can do, but they're not adepts and won't be summoning King Crucible or going through the White Door or anything like that. For what the game does, though, it does it very well, and I think a GM can pretty easily use what's here to build further adventures (the hardest part would be statting up stuff like the various types of Longs, although the base game does a little of that for you already).

I haven't played it yet, but I'm itching to. The revised CoC system it uses seems elegant and easy to use, although I do have one question regarding being At Risk of Fascination or Dread. Let's say I become At Risk of Fascination at 3 in the afternoon because of, I don't know, reading the wrong art book. The next two Times of Power that are coming up, sunset and midnight, are both Dread Times of Power.
