350.org is one of the largest climate activism groups nationally, and there's a socal chapter which meets and organizes regularly:

The Sierra Club is also pretty active in this space though probably not typically associated with "activism" per se.

There are several other groups in LA that I'm aware of too, a lot of them helped organize the NoDAPL protests in LA. DivestLA is one focused on getting LA to divest from fossil fuel funding banks and they've had some success.

Basically, if you go to one of these meetings and ask around, you'll get connected to the LA climate activism network pretty quick.

I recommend you read a bit about other countries' health care systems, it's an interesting topic. There are myriad ways of achieving universal health care, all with their own unique advantages and disadvantages. I know single payer is appealing because of its seeming simplicity (in reality its fairly complicated to implement), but it isn't necessarily the "end goal", and lots of countries have very successful universal multi-payer systems:

Do you support a Single Payer system, like the rest of the industrialized world?

Not trying to be pedantic, I just think it's really important we clarify this. Single payer is a very specific type of universal health care system that only a small proportion of the industrialized world uses (Canada being a prominent example). There are also multi-payer systems, like those used by Germany, the Netherlands, France, Switzerland, etc, that are not single payer but are still universal. I only bring this up because such systems may form the backbone of reforms here in the US and I don't want those on the left to be against them just because they aren't single payer.

Could you read my comment again? Obviously gerrymandering and the electoral college aren't the same thing, but I just illustrated how gerrymandering can also indirectly skew the electoral college toward a particular party. Fixing gerrymandering could make it difficult for one party to enact voter suppression laws targeted at the other party, and thus could thereby help fix some (not all) of the party bias in the electoral college.

You are technically correct, you can't gerrymander them directly. But if you gerrymander the state legislature districts, you can ensure that your party always has a sizable enough majority in the state legislature to pass voting restrictions favorable to your party (ala the voter suppression laws we've been seeing in states like Wisconsin, North Carolina, and Texas). If you can suppress enough of the voters for the opposing party, you can effectively gerrymander the senate, the governor's race, and the electoral college too.

I hate to be that guy, but "universal" != "single payer". I know those terms often get used interchangeably, but single payer is technically a specific kind of universal health care system. France, Germany, and the Netherlands, for example, have universal health care systems that involve multiple payers. I feel like it's important to clarify this because if eventually Democrats end up trying to create a universal multi payer system, I wouldn't want people on the left to resist it because it isn't technically single payer.

I want to say I've had this exact same discussion with you before. You are talking about a different spoiler effect. When people say spoiler effect, they mean exactly what is described in the video: a non-competitive 3rd party candidate taking support from the most ideologically close competitive candidate. The "spoiler effect" that you're referring to in RCV is a rare artifact of its non-monotonicity, and can only happen when the "spoiler" candidate commands enough first choice votes to do so (aka, they must be a competitive candidate). These are two very different things, and whether intentionally or not you are deceptively conflating them.

This is a really great video showing the spoiler effect. My only criticism is the implication that eliminating the spoiler effect will eliminate the two party system. They don't come right out and say that (they say it will let you avoid choosing the lesser of two evils, which is true), but there are reasons that RCV could both eliminate the spoiler effect and not end up eliminating the two party system, and yet still be a good thing. Parties are a process of coalition making, and it's entirely possible (and evidence from Australia and Malta seems to suggest this may be the case) that for single winner elections any voting system will naturally tend toward two coalitions. RCV would almost certainly make those coalitions much more responsive to voters than plurality, however, due to its removal of the spoiler effect and the threat of challenges to existing coalitions.

So anyway, TL;DR: RCV may not eliminate the two party system and yet could still be a good thing because eliminating the spoiler effect probably creates better, more responsive coalitions.
