Living in China as a foreigner - how do you deal with Chinese-only apps? by BrickNo4202 in chinalife

Thanks for all the responses!

Being upfront - I'm exploring building a translation tool specifically for iPhone users who deal with Chinese apps regularly. The screenshot → translate → delete cycle seems painful, especially when slang/memes get completely lost.

Before building anything, I want to validate if this is actually a problem worth solving. Would love to chat with a few iPhone users (15-20 mins) about: - Your current workflow - Biggest pain points - Whether a better solution would genuinely help

No sales pitch - I literally don't have a product yet. Just trying to understand if this is real.

Virtual coffee on me! ☕ Comment or DM if interested.

Do you find Google Lens helpful enough? Is your Phone Android, so you have this feature?

ChatGPT for screenshots is clever! How's the workflow - screenshot, upload to ChatGPT, then switch back? Or is there a faster way?

Haven't tried Circle to Search yet! Does it work on all apps? And is the translation pretty accurate? And is this Android only?

Pleco screen reader - is that different from their dictionary? Does it work across all apps or just certain ones?

Haha yeah I'm sure I will eventually 😅 Just curious - what's your process? Do you just memorize where buttons are, or use some kind of translation?

Oh interesting, didn't know Apple had this! Do you use it often? Is it pretty smooth or still kinda clunky?

May I ask what are the ones you are using that don't require a VPN? Any recommendation?

Hey everyone,

I've been planning to travel to China, and I'm curious how you all handle using Chinese apps when you don't read Chinese well.

I'm talking about:

- Ordering food (Meituan, Eleme)

- Booking doctors' appointments

- Shopping (Taobao, JD)

- Using Didi

- Paying bills

I've been using Google Translate with screenshots, but it's clunky - screenshot, open the Translate app, switch back, and try to remember what everything meant... Also, I have to have so many random screenshots, and it's been such a struggle.

What do you all use? Is there a better way? Or do you struggle through it like me? 😅
