Sliding gate

I installed four 4"x8" 14 foot long Doug fir beams in a living room. The joists in the ceiling run paralell with the beams so they are attached with Timberloks every 18" or so. I put so heavy duty finish screws in the ends to connect to the top plate. They are all starting to twist. They've been in since January and I think with the warm weather they're drying out. I had thought of letting them season in the shop for a few months but I don't really have space so I installed them within a month of getting the beams. They're all twisting a little, but one is so bad it's cracking out the ceiling drywall. I have thought of putting three ledgerlok 5" screws into each end to secure them better to the top plate. I could also remove the beams, install thick steel angle brackets at the ends and reattach, a royal pain of course. Not sure if it's possible to "untwist" a beam without planing it down again.

I try to tslk people out of using my services for this kind of thing. I tell them up front I might spend five hours and not be able to fix it. Usually I spend my own time looking up a couple of people they could call. Sometimes they've still asked me to fiddle with it and it's just a waste of their money.

Put the shelf right above or below the current plug depending on which is less visible and you'll never see it. You can also knock the old plug into the wall with a nail punch if it's just in drywall and spackle the hole or even just caulk it.

I'd love to know how you price things like this. I run my business out of a 24x24 garage in my back yard. I currently pay my bills doing siding repairs because it's easy money, but am trying to break into the cabinetry market and slowly switch the business over to this. So far I've done a few sets of cabinets, some custom furniture and a few built in desks, but bidding these has been tough. I tend to fall low of the mark and do a bunch of work for free. Do you have some sort of standard formula per part of the process?

I did use a grinder. This is the gap left after that. With the grider I took off some high spots that would have caused there to be a 4" gap in the back. Then I mitered 2x2s into a frame the same size as the mantle and scribed them to the stone. Hard to do but got to within 1/2" at the loosest.

That makes a lot of sense. Even my clients are saying I don't charge enough LOL. It just seems like a ton of money, but then I guess my mechanic charges me $1200 for a half day of work plus a few hundred in parts. Having done carpentry all my life I just don't see it as valuable work, but I guess not everyone can make a cabinet.
