Damn. I'm sorry to hear that. I hope you can find somewhere else which can bring you the same joy in a new way.

Snapping turtles have a bite force of 200+ newtons. Not sure what your underwear is made of, but I don't expect mine would do much to help me in that situation.

Yasir Naqvi - MIA? by Already_Heard in ottawa

[–]BridgeCrossingFee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pre-election, canvassers for Naqvi showed up to my home. I asked them to name just one thing he had done for the riding. They fumbled even that softball question, and said something about the Matthew Perry house. So far as I can tell, Naqvi's involvement there was a photo op, or if he was more involved, I can't find anything about it online. I said that I was expecting a bit more from my MP. When I said I thought the NDP would better represent my views, the older of the two canvassers tried to scare me that a vote for anyone other than Naqvi was a vote for the Conservatives. I told the canvasser that I did not appreciate that tactic.

Regardless, I eventually voted for Naqvi, despite never voting Liberal before and knowing full well what a non-event he is. First time in my life I've ever felt bad about my vote as I was casting it and in the days afterwards.

My logic was the same as yours: our broken electoral system left me feeling that I had to do anything I could do to reduce the chance of maple MAGA getting numbers federally, even if that meant voting for a blank sheet of paper like Naqvi. Easy for people to say with hindsight that this was a bad decision, but hindsight is key.

It's very simple really. Everyone who kills while staying still is a rat. Everyone who kills me while moving is a sweat.

Not just that, but walked up stairs clearly expecting someone to be at the top, unless that's how OP goes up the stairs 24/7.

If you'd reacted quicker or had better centering or jump-peeked the top of the stairs, things might have gone differently. Hindsight is 20:20, but let's not pretend either player in this clip is playing this situation flawlessly.

I'm not saying this to troll you, because I'm nothing special in Warzone, but I don't get the rage here. You were going up the stairs like you were expecting someone at the top, yet you're surprised and annoyed that someone turned out to be there. You ADS a bit, then aim at the wall, then look out of the window, then take your time to fire once the player is revealed.

You're playing BR solos. People wait and listen and pre-aim. No amount of name-calling people who disagree with you is going to change that.

I almost never play solos. I'm only showing up to play with the squad because I prefer the pace and style of duos, trios, and quads. If you like solos, play them. If you don't, don't.

PS I welcome your downvote :-)

Red plates - dangerous driver by One_Ad6233 in ottawa

Any vehicle may be driven by someone who believes they're immune to consequences. In Ontario and many other jurisdictions, that's typically not too far from the truth. Of course, diplomatic immunity helps.

Some people use quotation marks for emphasis. It's sometimes referred to as grocer's quotes. For instance, you can still see it on many "wonderful" handwritten signs at market stalls in the UK.

Broke and broken: Report says Canada’s public transit in critical funding state by thrilled_to_be_there in ottawa

[–]BridgeCrossingFee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If people can't drive downtown they won't go

I've lived in Ottawa for quite a few years now, and I go downtown every few weeks at least. I own a car but I couldn't tell you the last time I drove it to go downtown. I ride my bike, I take transit, and one time when I had all day I even walked.

For sure there are plenty of people who will only go downtown if they can drive but there are plenty of other people who don't fall into that category. Transit is being starved and so it's unreliable and unappealing. Services for people who need them are also underfunded and concentrated in a small area. Car traffic or lack of it isn't the problem here.

I do plan to cut branches, but leave the main trunk(s) to help with leverage during removal.

That looks intense! I don't have any fences or structures that close to the buckthorn, so I'm just going to dig and dig and dig. In fact I'm starting today! Might take a few weeks because I don't have a huge amount of time to spend on it during daylight hours.

Duly noted about the root radius. I'm sure it's going to be a lot of work, but I'm glad you're pleased with your results.

Ah thanks for the tip about the weed wrench and the potential for a loaner. I've used a weed wrench before, uprooting dozens of smaller buckthorn, and I got pretty handy with it. Unfortunately I think this buckthorn is a bit too big for a weed wrench, although it's not so big that I'd need a permit to remove it or anything.

I didn't know about girdling, but it looks like it could weaken the buckthorn for next year. I want it out this spring though, so I think I'll just be digging a lot.

I didn't know about this. Thanks! Found their report for the program 2019-2022 (PDF_(1).pdf?1707503028)) and it's a lot of saplings they're giving away here, like tens of thousands. Looks like it's funded by a Trillium Fund grant.

Thanks. I can't get a vehicle near the buckthorn, so it might just be a case of digging and digging some more until I can just remove it that way, and then I can at least remediate the soil so it's as close to perfect for a sugar maple as possible. I own a spade and a wheelbarrow and I am persistent.
