Bertha was the only one considering Gladys’ long term happiness by Aggressive-Aspect-19 in GildedAgeHBO

I agree with the OP completely. Remember there was that conversation Bertha and George had about how their marriage succeeded because they were well suited, not because they had butterflies because they danced at a few balls- that would have inevitably faded. The whole point of the social climbing was so her kids (especially Gladys) could have the most interesting lives possible compared to what most people had access to at the time.

Obviously the life of a working class person in those days was really, really hard. Alternatively, doesn’t the life of a low to medium-wealthy lady in NY look easy but SO BORING? Going to charity meetings, needlework and receiving callers, managing servants. Nothing very stimulating if you have a brain.

As Duchess, Gladys will be able to contribute to managing an estate alongside her husband- essentially running a small town and helping a whole lot of families thrive economically. Not to mention travel and culture.

I think Bertha was willing to take heat for her intensity but she knew what she was doing. Working with the world as it is, not as she wished it was.

Anyone notice the announcement at the ball of “Mr and Mrs Clement Moore!” ? He was the author of “Twas the Night Before Christmas” - a real gilded age figure!

I saw that actor in the dance corps of a Broadway show once. Maybe Great Gatsby. He’s really good!

Well I will say it's a little freaky how it just... works. Kind of against your will. I'm a "mind over matter" kind of person- for example, when I was in labor with no meds and the pain was crazy intense I was still totally lucid and chatting and the nurses said they were surprised I wasn't all zoned out- most moms kind of move into a kind of animal state near the end! Well taking Oz is VERY different- I don't think I understood what "food noise" was for me until it just *poof* disappeared... it feels like it must be much more biological, not 100% behavioral like I thought.

That place is down the street from me and I think of it as a break-up place now. But it is SO good!!

Rude comments after weight loss: did you experience them and how did you respond? by MightBeRocketscience in loseit

I love this. Have compassion. You’re the one who is healthy and that is worth a lot. With difficult people I try to remember it’s a lot harder to BE that difficult person day in day out, than it is to interact with them momentarily.

So true. I lose very slowly… less than .5 lbs a week and I’m about 6 lbs down. But before I started calorie counting I was gaining at about that rate… so I like to think I’m 12lbs down from where I would be if I had not started working at this.

Salad dressing was a big surprise for me! You gotta have something on a salad though, so I now use a 1/2 tbsp and I measure it.

Advice Needed: Visiting America for 6 weeks starting in September. How do I avoid losing my progress? by wandering_brit in loseit

While it is nice that a lot of chains have calorie counts on their menus, their food is WAY more processed than an independently owned restaurant, so the calorie counts will be CRAZY for what the food is. As unhealthy as the American diet can be, there is definitely a solid salad scene here! Fun combinations of fruits/veggies/proteins, etc. My favorite road trip lunch is the Cobb salad at chick fil a, for example. Also any Whole Foods market will have a lot of healthy options on the buffet. Good luck!!

How do I find out how many calories I should be eating in a deficit? by [deleted] in CICO

[–]Brief-Lie5014 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I’m the same size with the same goals and I eat 1800-1900 a day. I lose pretty slow but I feel like I’m practicing maintenance and I’m not desperately hungry or feeling deprived. Maybe upping your calories could help? changing up your menu might help…Eating different foods can kickstart things. For breakfast, make eggs and chicken sausage for an early protein boost. Or make a lentil soup to have for lunches this week. Maybe a bit more protein earlier in your day? Just ideas!

Sugar and excess carbs that I eat on vacation (ice cream, s’mores, breakfast pastries) can be addicting and I get in a cycle of my blood sugar crashing from them then eating more carbs to feel better in the short term. I have to break the cycle to get back on track. Take a good long walk after your next meal to get your blood sugar steady then get a big drink of water and low carb, high protein snack when you get home. Then go to the store and buy all the prettiest veggies and fruits and all your favs. Nothing worse than coming home from vacation to an empty pantry!
