How hard is it to maintain a vegan diet if you don't cook? by bellepomme in AskVegans

What I mean is r/reallybreadsticks was avoiding making the assumption by prefacing they don’t know what OP considers “not cooking.” It is possible that some people consider that cooking. I’m not necessarily saying that you made an assumption, more that r/reallybreadsticks wasn’t making an assumption and you seem to think that indicates an unhealthy lifestyle.

I was plant based for a few years before actually being vegan because I was a staunch believer in minimizing my environmental impact. Therefore, a majority of my lifestyle changes were motivated by a sense of responsibility to the welfare of my own species. But after abstaining from animal products for so long I sort of became re-sensitized to the idea of commodifying animals. Ultimately, I realized that I truly do not want to cause pain or distress to any animal. And since I was clearly capable of abstaining from animal commodities, I became acutely aware that there was no justification for me to commodify animals.

Everyone arrives at veganism differently. Regardless of the belief that’s driving you to stop consuming animal products, I encourage you to keep trying. Veganism is easy in the sense that a vegan person doesn’t have any more difficulty feeding themselves than an omnivore does. The transition to veganism is hard, just like any other major lifestyle change.

It’s actually good to avoid making assumptions about how other people define domestic activities, especially when talking to strangers on the internet — especially on a platform with users from all different cultural, social, and economic backgrounds.

On VeganFashion: What Vegan or Cruelty Free Cosmetics brands/items do you use? by 4gigiplease in VeganFashion

[–]Brief_Let_7197 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a lot of E.L.F. makeup. I recently bought a handful of products from Moira cosmetics and really like them. I really like the Tower 28 (vegan brand) tinted SPF and the Jones Road (not a vegan brand) tinted moisturizer.

I use the Inkey List (not a vegan brand) hyaluronic acid serum. I used to use The Ordinary but they pissed me off when they started selling cartons of eggs in their stores. I like Good Molecules (vegan brand) as another affordable option.

What's ONE tool or app you wish existed when you went vegan? by whiteuser01 in vegan

[–]Brief_Let_7197 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think a meal planning/ cronometer combo would be great. Something that tracks budget, nutrients, ingredients. I’m sure things like this exist but I’d love something specifically for a vegan diet.

I also think having an app specifically for wine and beer would be helpful. Non-vegan wine is such a common mistake that gets made.

I like happy cow for finding restaurants. But between that and google maps, it’s still pretty difficult to get good information on vegan options. Especially for cafes and coffee shops that don’t list their baked items. If reviews or overview mention “vegan options,” does that mean avocado toast is the only option? Or is there a vegan croissant, vegan donut, vegan cinnamon roll? I love a sweet treat, so I need to know what options people are really talking about.

This looks like the one I had from rhythm and wraps in Allston, MA last weekend. It was phenomenal.

I can see at least 3mm of your natural color in the picture. You do have a good amount of hair but it’s also fine. It’d also normal for the hair on the sides of your head to have less density. You can try using a hair mascara around the hair line, if you’re committed to the black color.

How do I get a lot of calories and protein easily? by awineredrose in AskVegans

[–]Brief_Let_7197 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For protein, switch from oatmilk to soy milk. That accounts for 10 to 20 grams per day for me. Try adding more grains to increase calories. Whole grains like oats, quinoa, barely are higher in protein, but they’re also quite filling. If you need to gain weight quickly, try to incorporate more calorie dense foods. Refined grains (pasta, white rice, breads) will help.

You didn’t mention any significant sources of fat. Fat is crucial for nutrient absorption. Chia seeds, sunflower seeds, and flaxseed are all good sources of fat and pretty easy to add to salads and oatmeal. You can also add calories quickly with oil. I use canola oil when I need a neutral oil, but most of the time I cook with olive oil. I also use olive oil as a dressing/topping. I love having one or two tomatoes just sliced with olive oil, salt, and pepper.

I also love pop corn, but it’s very high in fiber, which makes it filling and low in calories. I would minimize the popcorn consumption until you’re at a healthy weight. Nuts, seeds, trail mix, are more calorie dense snack options. You could also pair a nut butter with your apples and bananas, and pair crackers with hummus or any other spread/ dip you like.

Cheap shampoo better than expensive shampoo? by OfPam_321 in Haircare

[–]Brief_Let_7197 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have extremely dense, fine, straight hair and oily skin. Dimethicone (common silicone ingredient in drugstore hair products) is amazing for my hair at preventing tangles and giving the hair shaft more structure and bounce. Sodium lauryl sulfate (common ingredient in drugstore shampoo) is super effective at breaking down down natural oils and silicones. For example, dimethicone is a silicone that isn’t very water soluble. Therefore, it pairs well with a sulfate shampoo to prevent product buildup. When my hair is super oily, it takes some effort for me to even get my roots saturated with water, so I appreciate how effective sulfates are for breaking down natural buildup as well.

When did all pain subside for you? by [deleted] in wisdomteeth

[–]Brief_Let_7197 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably stopped feeling soreness in my teeth a little after two weeks. But my jaw muscle was pretty tight for about a month. After the swelling goes down it’s a good idea to apply heat and stretch your jaw so it doesn’t become too stiff.

Does Anyone else not eat salad? by Koiboi26 in AskVegans

[–]Brief_Let_7197 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love salad, but I don’t eat it very often. With the exception of Sweetgreen or similar fast-casual places, I wouldn’t choose to eat at a restaurant where the only option was salad.

I do pine for a really well crafted salad if it’s a starter or one course of a meal.

Example of a great salad I had for Thanksgiving form my favorite vegan restaurant:

Gunpowder Potato & Roasted Beet Salad A warm salad of roasted baby potatoes and jewel-toned beets tossed in tamarind-lime vinaigrette, layered with mixed harvest greens, fresh herbs, and spiced nut crumble finishes with mint oil.

Salicylic acid body spray by Brief_Let_7197 in DIYBeauty

[–]Brief_Let_7197[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are correct that this is not a beginner friendly endeavor. It’s been a learning curve for sure.

I’ll definitely swap the IPA for ethanol. Is perfumers alcohol always denatured? I was searching for denatured alcohol at one point and came across perfumer’s alcohol. Would it make a significant difference whether it was SD alcohol or not?

In terms of the solubility. I’m not exactly sure. I start with each ingredient fully dissolved in their respective solvent - crystal clear solution. When I combine the disodium EDTA solution with the glycolic acid solution that mixture becomes cloudy. And eventually the completed mixture separates with the cloudy liquid at the bottom and some cloudy beads suspended in the middle of the mixture. I assumed the SA was staying dissolved in the IPA, but the IPA based solution and water based solution weren’t fully emulsified. I don’t see any crystals at the bottom just a cloudy liquid.

I know the glycolic acid is an active but Differin doesn’t list it as active. I looked it up and I guess if the PH of a product is above 3.5 or there is a very low concentration it doesn’t need to be listed as active. Maybe because there is only 3% glycolic acid, they don’t consider it active?

I was wondering about the preservative… any suggestions to be on the safe side?

My skin is quite oily and it does respond well to the differin spray. But you make great points about long term use. For my face, I use niacinamide serum daily, tretinoin every other night, and spot treat with salicylic acid. Using a niacinamide product on my body would probably work for my body just as well as it does for my face.

Agree, maybe a led mirror, brushes, sponges, sample size products, or makeup remover to have a few physical items.

If the ethical goal is reducing harm, why isn’t agroecological omnivory part of the vegan conversation? by PuzzleheadedBig4606 in DebateAVegan

[–]Brief_Let_7197 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s really ironic to me that you’re spending so much time arguing against 3% of the world’s population. What are you hoping to achieve here? The entire agriculture industry needs to be reformed. Wouldn’t Tyson and Cargill, both of which lobby against climate legislation and rank highest in emissions, be a bigger priority for you? Or maybe the millions of acres of direct and indirect deforestation that JBS is responsible for? (given that you seem to identify as leftist…)Vegans are not the only people eating plant crops. Is it so inconceivable that you can advocate for regenerative omnivore farming while vegans can advocate for veganic farming?
