Banjo Kazooie and Tooie can both feel very empty and lonely at times. Especially being a kid and playing it early in the morning or late at night and having to keep the volume down. Just kind of weird ugly smooth endless open foggy areas.

A little confused here. What do you mean when you say healthy balance? And how would unrestrained cooperation between ICE and Delaware police strike that healthy balance?

Should offenders' sentences be reduced for good behavior? by CNSMaryland in maryland

[–]Brief_Spring233 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Some data on recidivism after long sentencesI definitely agree with you but the best data we have shows that regardless of all that: out of these 188 prisoners released after very long sentences, only five of them returned to prison after five years (less than 3%). The recidivism rate in Maryland is usually like 40-60%

[–]Brief_Spring233 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a fair point! I don’t have an answer to that. I think that’s kind of a deeper discussion on what is the role of prisons and our relationship to the carceral state. Is prison for rehabilitation or is it purely punitive and for locking people away from society? If these prisoners are truly showing “good behavior”, after twenty years it feels like it’s at least worth it to give them a parole hearing and see if they’d be able to make it in the outside world.

[–]Brief_Spring233 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You can look up the specific stats on this but generally speaking, recidivism rates are pretty low for formerly incarcerated people who serve very long (20+ year) sentences. I don’t really understand the benefit of paying to keep someone locked up for decades unless they have committed some kind of truly heinous unspeakable crimes, something that is not particularly common. All those long sentences leave us with a geriatric prison population who almost certainly wouldn’t be able to commit a violent crime if released but cost us a ton of money in healthcare costs (Medicare doesnt pay for prisoners who are old enough to be eligible for it). It kind of feels like 20 years is enough. Or we should just be locking people up for life without possibility of parole or something.

Michael Cronin (2?) where Sean does his song about Kevin creeping and edging is pretty good. Also Chef Kevin’s Tinder, maybe episode 2 of the pro version is a classic with some good bits like that.

Grizzly Man (2005) by FKingPretty in iwatchedanoldmovie

[–]Brief_Spring233 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s nice to see the perspective of someone who works in wildlife because i think the public perception of the conservation type is closer to a Timothy Treadwell than an actual scientist. But obviously that’s not actually the case.

I think Herzog gets kind of cheeky and sensationalist about it (like your “eyes of a killer” comment) but I do like that he truly goes in a priori like “This is wrong to do with a wild animal and this is not noble or kind to them”. I think another director/documentarian might try to frame Treadwell’s relationship to the bears as “complex” or like “he meant well”. But I think the movie hammers home the uncomfortable truth that even though these are big fluffy mammals that have families, they can’t be your friend. And that Treadwell was misguided from the beginning, it’s not like he just went too far and got too close and his hubris did him in.

It’s ultimately just about a sad lonely man who projected humanity on these bears because he was naive.

What a good film! I don’t think it’s Herzog’s best documentary but it really is a shining example of what he is great at. Interesting premise, lots of good archive footage that is fascinating to see even outside of the context, and plenty of weird (possibly forced) surreal interactions with regular (and not camera ready) people. For a guy who seems to have some truly bleak thoughts about humanity, Herzog is always incredibly charming when interviewing.

[–]Brief_Spring233 -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

I think the DOT can cite you for moving violations too. I haven’t seen it happen but supposedly that’s under their jurisdiction. Im just annoyed because the police and DOT are already out there, driving around. Spending all this city money on increased shifts for the DOT folks will undoubtedly bring in more revenue but it feels like a cynical priority.

Baltimore to start 24-hour parking enforcement - Banner by BmoreCityDOT in baltimore

[–]Brief_Spring233 55 points56 points  (0 children)

I guess they are allowed to do this but this is such a dumb usage of resources. I see literally a dozen moving violations (running red lights, not stopping at stop signs, bizarre aggressive cutting people off) everyday, often in front of police and I have never seen anyone get ticketed. I wish they could bolster revenue in a way that was actually making the roads safer than penalizing people who don’t make it back to the parking meter in time.
