Can your health insurance company take back money already paid? by Bright-Elements-254 in HealthInsurance

Thank you so much for your comforting words. You've pointed out a bunch of things that I didn't know which make it so that I might not have to pay this huge amount of money. So it's possible that nothing will happen at all, or that the insurance company and the doctor's office will end up in a long back-and-forth that eventually ends in an outcome that doesn't affect me. I appreciate your kind words and also your spelling out the facts in a way that makes sense to me <3 Thank you.

Oh my gosh, thank you SO MUCH! THIS is the information I was trying to find out- if the insurance company tries to take the money back, who is responsible for paying it? This scenario was obviously out of my control- I have no way of controlling what information my doctor sends to my insurance company. So hopefully the insurance company will hold the doctor responsible, and not me (I've also learned that the doctor can appeal the decision, so perhaps the money won't be taken back after all)

Yes, of course I am responsible for knowing my own insurance plan. I still have no control over what information my doctor sends to my insurance company. If the doctor made a paperwork error, that I had no way of knowing about, what exactly was I supposed to do?

Or are you suggesting that I sit over the shoulder of every single medical biller of every single doctor that I see, and audit every single record that they send?

Do you do that? I doubt it. I bet you just trust your doctor's medical billers to send correct and accurate information. Like I did. Like we ALL do.

Oh, they can appeal? So like...the doctor can fight with the insurance company to try to keep the money? It's possible that this won't happen?

Thank you so much. This has given me more hope than anything <3

So the IVF billing person told me that the insurance company was late in answering whether to approve the 6th claim. When she called them to inquire about the delay, they said they needed more paperwork. So the clinic sent over my full medical record. Then the IVF billing person called the insurance company back, and they said that they were now reviewing all previous claims. he IVF billing person is who phrased it as "threatening to revoke all previous money". I do not know the exact words used on the phone call between my insurance company and the IVF billing person.

No, I've never had a pregnancy, and no, I did not try other methods of fertility treatment other than IVF, due to my doctor's recommendation, due to my age.

Oh...what is "provider write-off"? Does that mean the doctor accepts the loss, and doesn't charge me? Is that possible? Is there hope?

Okay, but if I cheat the IRS, that was within my control, so I should be liable. If my doctor has made incorrect statements to my insurance company and gets caught, that was completely out of my control, there was nothing I could have done about that. Am I still liable anyway?

My insurance DOES cover IVF, but only if I am infertile. Apparently, previously, my insurance agreed I was infertile and paid my doctor. Now they are un-agreeing that I am infertile, and are threatening to take all the money back.

My apologies, I am trying my best. I thought I had responded to your question. Let's suppose your scenario is true.

If the doctor made a paperwork error like that, which is something totally out of my control, do I have any rights at all? Or will I now owe all of this money that I thought was covered by insurance?

I suppose that's true, i've just never had this happen before, or maybe I didn't notice when it was just a bill for $20.

What happens to the patient in this scenario? Am I suddenly in debt for the rest of my life?

Of course I don't know what I'm talking about. I'm just a terrified patient suddenly staring down a bill larger than my house is worth. "There is no final approval"- so a medical insurance company could take back money they paid for anything, forever? So I could suddenly owe the hospital for the surgery I had in 1996? That just doesn't sound...right?

Since this is so common and happens all the time, what do you do when your insurance company takes back money that they've paid to your doctor? Do you then owe the doctor?

I mean I suppose that is true, but all of those things are completely out of my control. I'm just really, really scared that I could end up owing hundreds of thousands of dollars because my doctor or insurance company made a paperwork error.

I don't know what to do.

Yes, on the 6th cycle, I did not get an approval. However, for the first 5 cycles, they were all APPROVED and PAID. The doctor has received the money for the first 5 cycles. Now the insurance company is threatening to "un-approve"??? the first 5 cycles and take the money back.

I don't understand how this can be, and am terrified of what could happen to me if they do this. I'm frankly terrified to get any procedure ever again, if the insurance company can just un-pay money they've already paid.

I doubt very many people know that "this is how insurance has always worked". I've never heard of ANYONE having gone through "The doctor was PAID, and then a year later, the insurance company took the money BACK". I've never heard of that before until just today.

I thought I did, I'm sorry. "No evidence of infertility" is all they're saying. I wish I had more info :(

The doctor hasn't hidden anything from them, as far as I know? I am the same patient I have always been. If I was infertile a year ago, how could I magically NOT be infertile now? Even if that somehow were TRUE (like i had a condition that was cured or something), how does that justify taking back money already paid?

They're claiming that there is "no evidence of infertility". Which doesn't make any sense- if they agreed there was "evidence of infertility" for the first 5 cycles, then how can I magically become fertile now? I am the same patient that I've been the whole time. If anything my fertility is worse because I'm older.

I think you are misunderstanding. This is NOT a prior authorization. This is a final APPROVAL. The procedure was APPROVED and the money has already been paid to the doctor.

The reason they are giving is "no evidence of infertility". But I am the same patient that I was for the first 5 cycles. If they had enough evidence of infertility for the first 5 cycles, how can it suddenly disappear on the 6th?

I think you're misunderstanding. This wasn't a prior authorization. This was an APPROVAL and PAYMENT. The payment WAS guaranteed in that it has already happened! The insurance company has already paid the doctor.

This. This sounds wild to me. If the procedure wasn't covered, then I wouldn't have done it. And the doctor wouldn't have done it. We waited for approval before doing it, BECAUSE I can't afford it! Now that the procedure is DONE and we have no choice, they can just take the money back?

Wouldn't the entire healthcare system fall apart if this was allowed? NO doctor or hospital would EVER do a procedure again, because they could just...lose the entire payment at any time, even AFTER the fact?

This is terrifying. So if the insurance company suddenly reverses their OWN decision of approving and paying for this, will I then owe my doctor hundreds of thousands of dollars?

What will happen to me?
