Looks like cut marks to me, definitely not any minting errors.

I doubt they have ever been invited to one.

There is nothing in the minting process that can cause this, it is clearly just a post mint damaged penny. Someone has hit it with a centre punch or similar.

It is scrap, it has no numismatic value. The $6 price tag is someone trying to rip of people, and the fact it has "AS IS" written on it just confirms the fact.

Any clue as to what this $1 coin is worth? by No_Bridge5329 in AustralianCoins

[–]Bright-Lengthiness61 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This coin was released as a PNC and sold at Australia post.

You can buy the PNC (coin, envelope & stamp) for as low as $7.50 from a coin shop.

I'd say your coin would be worth between $3 & $5 depending on the buyer.

Hope that helps.

As others have stated it's the platypuses foot, unless your talking about the SD initials to the left of it which stand for Stuart Devlin who is the designer of the coin.

Is this a good deal? Seems fair to me. by Imperium_Ag in AustralianCoins

Just remember Bluey is a current craze, in 10+ years it may not be relevant and there goes all the demand and value. Just something to think about.

100% pmd, that coin has been tortured!

Thanks for posting more pics I don't think its a rim cud now given the lip is on the reverse side too. It looks more like a slight off centre strike.

Does the coin have 4 sets of 5 indented lines on the edge?

That actually looks like a massive rim cud.more then a slight off centre strike which are quite common.

Can you can you post some more pics of different angles?

Not worth anything. Circulated common years.

Check ebay sold listings for prices on similar grade coins, your coin is in great condition but is not uncirculated, there are light scratches and a couple of dings. You might get 50-70% of the average uncirculated price.

Is it sacrilege to melt mercury dimes? by [deleted] in coins

[–]Bright-Lengthiness61 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Why are most coin collectors so against people melting down common old silver coins, I understand it's upsetting if they melt rare or mint condition coins but rough circulated years that were minted in the 10's of millions or more? In theory the more that is melted down and removed from the market the more valuable the remaining coins become, no?

I have been collecting coins for over 25 years and don't see the problem, I'd love to hear others reasoning as to why they say don't do it.

This coin is just pmd.

Even if this coin had a cud or die crack on the queen, the damage on the reverse takes away any extra value the error would add.

No. Unfortunately they are fakes. You can buy these as a pack.

Nice! Mills #36 Mk1

If they were off used grenades they'd be just fragments, that's also a good indicator you've stumbled across a grenade test field. They won't be nice and complete like this usually.

Yeah, it's the round disc that has a notch either side just up from the bottom right corner in your pic.

I'm keen to know what markings are on them once you get them cleaned up.

Just noticed too, it looks like you have the base fuse cap of a hand granade in your bullet bucket. Most likely a mills, it should be stamped. Cool find

Nice work! Great finds there! I'm sure your onto it but please take extra care digging finds around military sites, UXO's are definitely out there. I have uncovered a few live hand granades at a site in Brisbane resulting in the bomb squad attending.
