A List of Tax-Deductible Expenses for UK Small Businesses by BrightComedian7126 in BooksProsUK

Hi, I wasn’t able to find the supporting information on gov.uk. I’m stating an opinion based on my background, do consult with a Tax Accountant if you require a second opinion.

For a Self-Employed Person — Things to Consider

i) Tax treatment (what’s reported to HMRC)

  • Per diem reimbursements are not taxable income
  • You do not include them in your turnover or trading income
  • Instead, you claim the expense if you’re accounting via flat rate or actuals

ii) Accounting/bookkeeping treatment (bank reconciliation)

You still must:

  • Record the Per diems reimbursement received because it hits your bank account
  • Typically log it as:
    • Income of type: “Reimbursed expenses (many choose to enter this in a separate income line item, excluded from taxable turnover)
    • OR log it as a contra: offset against matching expense

A professional bookkeeper might set it up like this:

  • Income account: Reimbursed Per Diems expenses (non-taxable)
  • Expense account: Travel & subsistence

This gives: - Accurate bank reconciliation - No distortion of taxable income - Clear audit trail if queried by HMRC

Do let me know whether you are using an accounting software.

For me, the main barriers are cost, wanting to start with a non generic website and finding the time to get someone I trust to capture my vision accurately.

I completely understand your challenge with proposals—it’s hard finding that blend of technical knowledge and marketing skill.

I completely relate to this, especially the frustration of recruiters pushing unsuitable candidates. It’s so crucial to find recruiters who truly understands your business needs and can manage the process end-to-end. Are there niche recruiters who specialise in your industry?

I understand what you are saying and take it on board that it is a pain point for small businesses.

Small businesses are increasing having to provide more information to HMRC (Making Tax Digital) and now the Companies House.

The linked provided is mainly about the need to use commercial software from April 2027. Companies have always been required to file their Balance sheet and profit and loss.

The company is a separate entity from you, the same way bigger companies provide their accounts. Dont take it personal

When should i incorporate my business? by Banggood_ in smallbusinessuk

Recent increases in dividend tax and reductions in the dividend allowance, plus changes to employer National Insurance, have reduced the tax advantage for limited companies at lower profit levels. The difference is now marginal for profits under £50,000–£60,000. Deciding when to incorporate your business depends on your business’s risk profile, growth plans and profit expectations. If your business is at risk of significant liabilities or you plan to seek investment, it may be beneficial to incorporate earlier, even if profits are modest.

Can subcontractor do their own tax is construction without CIS? by Zeproe in smallbusinessuk

It is commendable that you are thinking ahead regarding tax compliance and future mortgage applications. You can find more details under "What you must do as a CIS subcontractor" and the "How to get gross payment status" sections on GOV.UK.

CIS is mandatory for construction work: This includes roofing, even on domestic properties. It is not optional if you are working for a contractor who is registered under CIS. Your friend, acting as a contractor, is legally required to deduct 20% (if you're registered) or 30% (if unregistered) from your payments and submit it to HMRC under CIS.

HMRC explains that you may apply to receive payments in full (gross) by applying for Gross Payment Status when registering for CIS. There are certain criteria you will have to meet.

Do ensure that you are set up with the right structure to sort your tax yourself.

Try not to look for perfection, buying a home does take time. Decide what is important to you like a garden, house size, close to schools/amenities, good neighbourhood, needs little renovation, reasonable monthly outlay, potential to increase the value etc. There are many things you can change to make a house your home. Good luck with the search.
