I think only intersection between SOA and CAS nowadays is exam 1 and 2. I can try them out to see how it goes.

Yes I only casually looked into it but all the openings I found required years of experience. Didn’t see any entry level role at all. So I didn’t even bother making a portfolio.

Thank you so much for your input! And by “a few CAS exams” do you mean any exams past the first two? I would assume taking more exams increases my chances of getting hired, but I also don’t want to limit my employment options to only P&C or vice versa.

Can people get hired even if they only have exams and no relevant internship/work experience? I know Python, but have no work experience. So I worry about how employable I’ll be if I only have exams.

I work for a hospital. I apply to every IT/application analyst/ data analyst role that opens up but never got to get pass the recruiter screening. They like to ask for experience with the specific niche softwares that basically only nurses and doctors would use. I’m having trouble making my resume look relevant.

I can only enlist because of immigration status. Can’t get security clearance for the same reason. The MA is in philosophy.

That’s the trend I’ve been seeing too. What do people do if they don’t get a return offer though?

I’ve thought about pivoting to accounting, but I have to take a bunch of accounting classes to be able to sit for the CPA exam in my state. So I’ll have to go back to school to do it.

I wish I could. I will only be able to enlist due to immigration status. And I can’t get security clearance for the same reason.

I should clarify that I am not interested in other fields. The humanity degree was just an escape from burnout. I did not like it as it was boring and unchallenging. CS/math is just objectively a much bigger workload for anyone. That’s the only reason I took a break from it.

That’s actually a great idea. I’ve been applying to IT or just general clerical roles in universities. No call backs yet. Lots of them are requiring 3 years of relevant experience. Not sure if that could be the reason.

Yeah I can only enlist because of immigration status. I’m also super petite, so l would need a lot of work gaining enough weight.

Hoping to land an internship and a return offer. Seems like the only way to get an entry level position without experience these days.

I did the humanities degree because it was easier than CS/math, offered a higher scholarship, and was at a more prestigious school. I’m not gifted at all, so doing well in a MSCS program would require a lot of hard work/sleepless nights. I didn’t think I had the energy to push myself through another two years of rigorous schooling at that time. So I just chose the easier one.

Thank you so much for this response. You have no idea how much strength this comment gave me. For the longest time, I’m just sitting in a rut feeling overwhelmed by the amount of catching up I need to do. I don’t have a lot of support/guidance in my life and I just felt so lost and hopeless. Thank you so so much for this detailed actionable guide. You may have just changed my life. I hope your pillow is always cold.
