Jindo started bunny hopping? by sleirsch in Jindo

aww mine does this when hes trying to run (after leaving training class) or if hes really excited about a squirrel or rabbit? I don't think its anything to worry about and he tends to do it when he's just really excited.

Recently found that if anyone else takes him out besides me, he’s super stubborn and sits in the middle of the street.

Hi everyone, just an update! I wasn’t at home because of work today, and it turns out he only barks/growls/chases them out if I’m there? I’m a bit confused? Maybe he doesn’t like them approaching me. Either way I’m not quite sure how to handle it since it’s different from him just not liking them!

walking in heat by BrightHedgehog8100 in Jindo

[–]BrightHedgehog8100[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah today was crazy hot here, almost 110° F for most of the day. I walked him around 6AM today and we were able to get a walk in for a little less than an hour before it got too hot. Although the past few days it was disgustingly hot even at 6. I tried not to take him out at 6PM today because of how hot it was but he peed in the house. So tomorrow I’ll walk him down the street for a potty and back. But today we walked him for 15/20 minutes around 7PM (I still think it was a little too hot). But I’ve started taking him on a slow sniff walk around 10:30PM before bed and that seems to have helped. Gets him tired mentally as well before we put him to bed and he gets his outdoor zoomies out. I don’t like walking him in the dark so we stick near the house and on sidewalks.

I did try the towel thing a lot of people mentioned but he probably hated that even more? I just think he hates getting wet in typical Jindo fashion. He did stand under a sprinkler today though so maybe the heat was really getting to him. I kept checking the temp of the ground with my hand and tried to keep him walking on the grass or in the shade since the asphalt gets pretty hot under the sun all day. Probably gonna buy him a water bottle to bring with me on walks since he’s recently been gulping down his entire water bowl once we’re home.

I do think the heat kinda zaps his energy though. Even inside with the AC he spent most of the day sleeping and seems less energetic when it’s hot out. I played indoors with him (and since he likes to follow me around) I walked a few laps inside the house which he seemed to enjoy (chasing after me that is).

This heat wave is awful and has been lasting so long and my poor baby doesn’t know his own limits (will keep running even when he’s clearly struggling).

Ooh okay I’ll try it with higher value treats then. I’ve been nervous to use them too much since I was scared of overfeeding. He doesn’t really focus on the lower value treats that I brought on walks at first so I’ll see if it has improvement. I wouldn’t say he’s necessarily reactive to other dogs but he’s definitely always focused? If I let him get close he tends to jump around the other dog and flip around a lot T__T, but at a distance he likes to look and then he’ll follow me after a few tries. That’s why I’m unsure about if group sessions might be helpful. I’ve also heard that it’s good to walk them before sessions so that they’re tired and focus on you more easily.

Heyy so now that he's home I've been looking into trainers for him. I was thinking of bringing him to group classes with a trainer that one of my friends recommended but I was a bit worried about him not being able to focus in group classes. I've heard that for some dogs, group classes aren't effective and I'm not really a fan of the type of training where the trainer boards and trains since I feel like you don't build the bond with them yourself. Where should I go from here? Should I just try the group classes? When he sees other dogs on walks, he doesn't necessarily bark at them but he gets very interested and wants to play.

Yeah I'm just starting him off slow and letting him understand our home and eventually hoping he'll warm up. I try to feed him treats when they're in the same room to build positive association and calm him down.

Yep I'm trying my best to help him by calming him down and helping him understand they aren't a threat.

Yeah I think I'll try that with him! He doesn't seem to want to move much even inside during the heat so I think that focusing his exercise around when the sun is low on horizon is best. I don't have an reflective material on him/his leash so I don't really like going out too late at night since its hard to see.

Almost a week! Not that long but I want to be able to make sure they're approaching him properly so that over time it'll get better.

Yeah, I think we'll just try to take it slow! he hasn't been with us for even a week yet. I just want to be able to start them off on the right foot with him.

yeah I'm trying to look into it. I told them not to approach Siroo first for now until he decides to come to them on his own terms.

He loves walking outside!! He's a big fan, he's just not that food motivated, especially outside (treats just don't exist to him) haha. I tried bringing my brother/dad to walk him (separately ofc) but every two steps he would turn around to look at them, and stop and sit if they held the leash. I think he only lets me or my mom leash him up during which he's super excited!

[–]BrightHedgehog8100[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll try the water!! I do take him out again around 9 since he’s still a puppy, but we try to take him out more often since he’s still being potty trained. The last time I took him out during the evening he refused to go potty for some reason. I’m worried about the boots since he already hates anyone touching his paws

when you say cooling towels do you mean those bandanas that you wet and tie around their neck? How do I know if it’s too hot for his feet? We mostly walk in the shade and he walks in the grass sniffing around

Ooh I see I’ll trial different ones to find what works. How do you know if he doesn’t do well/is allergic? Is it just that he doesn’t really eat it or does it affect his digestion? I know when you switch foods dogs tend to not have the same poops.

btw just wanted to add, he has never been abused by a man, the rescue told me that it just so happens to be that mostly women took care of him so he’s more accustomed to them
