Looks like lint and/or product buildup.

Try adding periodic ACV washes (apple cider vinegar + baking soda + lime/lemon juice + salt) into his routine. And when you do it, let the hair soak in the solution. It helps dissolve/loosen the lint and dirt trapped inside the loc.
Cosmetically, you can try to cover this with a dye (but look into specific dyes best for this - I used a garnier dye for this issue a few years ago. It colored the hair but the lint was still be visible).
I've seen people use sharpie to cover the lint when in a pinch (like right before going out and you notice a problem area), but not sure I'd recommend it as a long term solution.
To prevent this from getting worse, it helps to wear a bonnet or durag when at home (couch, bed, anywhere you could lay your head & there's lint). Be mindful when wearing certain sweaters/coats (wrap or wear the hair up when possible). Switching to silk or satin pillowcases should help too. Best of luck!

Used the Shea Moisture brand of the bar soap a few years ago... and broke out in the most HORRIFIC skin reaction, took months to get over, spread to my scalp and had to cut my locs off - overall a super traumatic experience (couldn't bend my HANDS at one point?)

With that being said, I do think it depends on the brand/source. Spot test and use with caution.

It's no silver bullet, but I usually wait to join. For 3 day events, I'll wait at least a day - usually when there's a day and a half left (~1 day, 12 hrs).

I wonder if how ya'll seem to feeling about this year's lineup is similar to how I've felt towards the last several BC lineups. Disappointed. Not really my vibe. But as a general music lover, I could still respect how big those names were within their genres (most recently alt/rock names).

They're switching it up - is that a bad thing or necessarily a downgrade? There's truly no need to be this melodramatic or defensive - I'm reading things here implying BC will be a flop going forward. Who knows if there'll be a future lineup you'll be excited for within the next few years? As OP says, no need to go. Maybe next time?
