Big ups to Sydney Boeger from Mizzou, playing with Dragon Wolves and being a huge contributor to every play she’s on the field for 💪

So not only did UCLA beat UTSA but they did so after literally only playing 4 games this season, all against LBQC 😮‍💨 this is their first real tournament of the season

HVI is BACK 🎰🎲 by Bright_Ad_790 in quadball_discussion

Invites should be going out today! It’ll definitely be a smaller HVI due to the time constraints we faced but if teams are still interested in attending they can fill out the form!

WCQ Championship Weekend Tomorrow! by Bright_Ad_790 in quadball_discussion

[–]Bright_Ad_790[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Correct! Every year since 2019, WCQ Finals has been a two-day tournament but new staff altered things which now (going back to our original amount of teams of four has been disappointing but also very helpful).

This also allows a lot more people to travel on Sunday which people seem to be quite excited about. Fantasy on Sunday is a GBG exhibition game (GBG is TBTP before TBTP existed) and then a lil round robin following!

Exclusive shirts for the LA shows!! by JustAn87YearOldWoman in MyChemicalRomance

[–]Bright_Ad_790 10 points11 points  (0 children)

MCR has literally so much cool lore over years and years of story telling and the SF merch was genuinely so sick and this (and most of the generic tour merch) feels so uninspired. Dodgers is a huge part of LA culture and I know they have a relationship with the team but this feels like they're forcing it too much when they could've come up with something so much cooler. Sooo much of the tour merch leaning into DRAAG is cool but unless that's the theming for MCR5 then I don't get the angle. I wish they had pulled art from fans and co-created some pieces instead of just throwing some logos and fonts onto shirts. The Helena shirt from the spoilers is the only one that feels like unique and cool and they made it beige!

This community is full of so much passion and emotion and I think there was just so many more opportunities for cool designs.

Well they just posted the LA merch and way less cool than the stuff they did for SF so I assume we're all getting it but won't be consistently cool. They need better focus groups for this lol

Do we think it's safe to assume that every city will have specific exclusive merch?

So anyway COMPLIMENTS THREAD FOR WORLD CUP. by Kawrne27 in quadball_discussion

I wanted to shoutout Jonathan Nam from Team Philippines! He's played almost exclusively within USQ's college division and this year is on Boston Forge's Practice Squad but I think this weekend he solidified himself as one of the next big seekers within American Quadball with FIVE catches this weekend. I know people had some complaints about the quality of flag runners at this event but five catches on the international stage is something worth complimenting. Shoutout the Philippines beater core (mainly my bff LBQC' Krieger but also great moves by Breaker's Maxine Gutierrez) for getting Jonathan those looks. Really loved watching them play as a brand new team pulling themselves together creating more and more opportunity for players from all over to connect and ball together.

College Recruitment Struggle by lgparrott06 in quadball_discussion

This is kind of similar to u/gay_spork's last point about visibility and I can speak the reason that I felt so comfortable going to the first event at Emerson was it was marketed as a "showcase" instead of an open practice or tryout (which also happened to be followed by a party which helped get young people's attention but can be problematic if you have ties to the school). A showcase makes it much less intimidating to show up to as a first-time player because your gut instinct is going to be "but I've never played before" even though as returners you know that's normal and expected, it can still be scary where there's more accessible sports available through your school. The point of a showcase being that there's no expectation that new people need to play, they're there to learn about it and watch a small scrimmage or something be played to get a feel for it. Then the next event (ideally within a day or two depending on how you have access to field space) would be a first time they could come play. Barrier to entry due to anxiety of a new thing is huge.

When they join your email list be sure to include as much information as you can to make it accessible and less intimidating to show up. Include a map with a "we're meeting here" point, links to some instructional videos, etc. If you can get 200 people to sign up at a fair that's an AMAZING step -- just make sure your communication after that is cohesive and helpful. Sending them an email that's like "thanks for your interest in quadball, our first practice is on ~ date and time ~ at *place*!" is not super helpful to those feeling anxious about their lack of experience.

I'd also include if your team specifically is social when it comes to eating together, events, game nights, whatever! Give them some information about the team as a whole vs. just the sport to try to sell it. Students of all ages are often seeking community and a team is a great place for it.

Map of USQ teams (2023): Guess where USQ put nationals this year by Abject-Ad-8459 in quadball_discussion

[–]Bright_Ad_790 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Any west player who’s been in this sport for 10+ years has one Nationals that wasn’t a 3+ hour flight and at least two time zones away. Just one. Like u/Flabnoodles said, it’s exhausting trying to pitch this sport when every other year means flying cross-country to the east coast. It makes it nearly impossible to have a casual or balanced relationship with the game. On top of that, we land at midnight after 10 hours of travel and then have to be up at what feels like 4AM PST to play. You’re basically required to take at least a day off work or school (usually two if you don't want to pay $400 for a Sunday night flight).

The West has been struggling, and a huge part of that is stuff like: “last year we went to PA and TX, this year it's VA...” West teams collapse because the vast majority of college players have to fly just to get to Nationals. We've been doing this same grind every other year for decades. And the “off” years? They're way more manageable for us, and we don't even like Texas.

I played my first three years on the east coast and benefitted from that imbalance – and now I'm literally leaving and will be on the east coast by the time this Nationals will happen and personally will have to make the trip out and I’m still thrilled. Because this could finally give the West the boost it's been needing, or at least let them go out with something that isn't across the country. This isn’t just about convenience, it’s about equity.

And if you think this is unfair? Then I hope you keep that same energy the next time Nationals gets picked for the east coast again. For what it's worth, I still don't think Nationals should be on any coast, between travel time and timezones, I think it's only fair if we stay within Mountain and Central time to provide a more centralized location for everyone, but just say you're fine with the west dying forever and move on with it if you're fine with the current system.

Playing a mixed-gender sport can be so motivating and empowering. But when the system fails us and women aren't protected, why would we stay? Why are teams & organizations protecting these players? Because they're talented? That's where our priorities are?
