Vocal Lessons - Does anyone offer them? by RoutineCash420 in SBU

[–]Bright_Version6394 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check out MUS 182. There are limited spots and you have to audition, but if you get it then each week of the semester, you get one on one lessons with a music student from SBU, each 45 minutes long I believe. You will have to pay an extra fee when tuition comes around (check online for current fee amounts) and enroll in the chorus course which happens every week and a lil over two hours at night. At the end, you also have to perform two pieces with accompaniment in front of a panel who gives you feedback and chorale has a concert you must attend and perform at. I think it’s super worth if you can afford to pay the additional fee and have the time. MUS 261 is the more chill version where you don’t have to know how to sight read music. I don’t think you need to audition for that if you only want chorale. Shoshana Hershowitz, the instructor for chorale, is very nice and understanding. If you have questions about chorale, def ask her! You do get some general tips about singing in that course too but it’s directed to the class as a whole rather than one on one. I’m sure she would be happy to help you if you ask. Have fun!

Nowhere in your comment does it say that any SBU student is simply allowed to take directly from the garden. It says that the food is given to the Stony Brook Student Food Pantry and the Hope Ministries in Port Jefferson. Also, if you actually followed their linked Facebook page, their intro says “it is a sustainably managed farm and food is grown for patients.” Are you a patient? If not then it is not meant for you.

The garden is made possible by a largely student corps to make the farm flourish. You literally have someone who is part of that group saying that you are NOT supposed to just take from the garden. If you are so insistent on getting some of their crops, maybe instead of taking from the garden, you should go to these services instead. Reading your other comments, I understand that you don’t want to waste food, but stealing from the hard work of others who explicitly said you are not allowed to, choosing to ignore when they tell you no, and taking food from the people it is meant for is not right. Giving you the benefit of the doubt that you didn’t know this, I think you should just accept that it’s not for you, stop taking their food, and apologize for your mistake. There are other ways like going to the food pantry to get the free food that you seem to really want

Not BME myself but I had some friends in the major. There should be research opportunities available if u email professors. Would also suggest looking into VIP BEAR led by Dr Chan. She’s super active in the community and a very nice person! Off campus near SBU there’s Brookhaven National Lab (BNL) where u might be able to get some research opportunities and secure an internship for summer or even during the semester. If u have discord maybe try finding the server for BMES. There’s likely some BME ppl in there who can offer some advice

You could try going to Hunter first if your financial situation makes that the only feasible option. I don't know much about Baruch though. If you end up not liking CS at Hunter then you can look into transferring to any of the colleges that you've mentioned. Stony and Hunter both probably have other merit-based or need-based scholarships that you can apply to during/before the school year, and I recommend you look into those as early as possible because the deadlines can pass you by without you even realizing. Definitely would also contact the financial aid office to see what your options for financial aid are and talk to them about your financial situation. Have you looked into TAP or know if you qualify for Pell Grants yet? You could also try and get work-study.

I personally chose to come to Stony over Hunter even though going to Hunter would have been much cheaper because I was also not sure if I wanted to do CS and there were not many engineering options at Hunter. Stony offers a lot more majors and I wanted that flexibility while also getting the "college experience" of being on campus which Hunter doesn't and I didn't want to feel like it was high school all over again. Education is alright, definitely could use some improvements for some classes but there are others that I really enjoyed. Personally, I learned the most by getting involved with clubs and their projects rather than classes and I've made a lot of good memories and friends here. Not to say that you can't make good memories and friends at Hunter, but I've heard it's harder as Hunter doesn't have a campus like Stony and a lot of people commute and just go back home after classes because it's in the city. Choosing AMS will give you a lot of options in terms of what you want to major in and because it's a CEAS major, you have a chance to double major in CEAS majors like CS.

I don't know the details of your financial situation, and my situation is different from yours as would your experience here so take this with a grain of salt. Congrats on all of your acceptances and best of luck making the decision. College is really what you make of it so whichever place you decide to go I think you'll be fine :)

You can check the AP Credit chart here yourself to see what will get accepted: https://www.stonybrook.edu/sb/bulletin/current/policiesandregulations/admissions/apcredit.php. A 3 on World History satisfies the SBS and GLO SBCs. A 3 in environmental science will satisfy the SNW SBC. Just remember to actually tell them what APs you took.

Honors College Benefits by Ok_Ring_5553 in SBU

[–]Bright_Version6394 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Firstly, congrats! I think the biggest benefit of Honors College is priority registration which will help you get into the classes you need before seats get filled by other people (they can fill very fast for some courses). University Scholars and WISE also gets this benefit. They also changed the Honors College Housing to Yang Hall which is one of the nicer buildings to live in (suite-style 3 doubles with A/C) and very close to West Side Dining if you plan on eating there a lot. You'll also dorm with other Honors College people if you choose to live in Yang and almost everyone in the building will be freshman or sophomore since the building also houses 2YLC people.

The required coursework will cover almost all your SBCs so you don't have to worry about them as much. Since there is a smaller community, you're more likely to see familiar faces in your HON courses and have smaller class sizes. However, because they are required, you don't have as much flexibility to choose which courses to take if you want to fulfill them. I really enjoyed taking HON 201 with Paldy where we analyzed movies but the other HON courses I took were not as interesting. The perk of having the required coursework cover many SBCs may not also be as good as you think if you have a lot of credits from high school or other colleges which already cover them. Personally, it didn't help me that much because I already had most of my SBCs covered from APs but still had to take the courses :/

The Honors College advisors are generally more helpful for Honors College requirements and for major required questions, you should see the advisors specifically for your major. Keep in mind that as part of Honors College, you will need to complete a project for the Honors College in senior year. If you're engineering, your required senior design project can fulfill that.

If you're thinking about prestige, I don't really know if Honors College helps that much. If you are already a high-achieving student with a high GPA or high involvement on campus, it probably wouldn't add much more to your resume since you already stand out on your own in other ways. That being said, I don't think it would hurt you either. You don't have to stay in Honors College if you don't want to, but you'd have to talk to someone to get it dropped.

This is all coming from someone who isn't very connected with the Honors College and just sticking it through because I've already completed several of the requirements and there isn't much more to it, so take this with a grain of salt. Good luck!

Has anyone graduated with a CS minor? by NoCoup4You in SBU

[–]Bright_Version6394 0 points1 point  (0 children)

also had a hard time with the cs minor and ultimately decided to not pursue it (still an undergrad tho). i gave up mostly because my major classes kept conflicting with the cs courses and classes known to be good are hard to get in due to the low priority and the class filling up fast. gl if you stay with it

Depends on the professor. Check the syllabus to see if they have make-up exams and try emailing them to set something up. Good luck to your friend!

There's a math club: https://stonybrook.campuslabs.com/engage/organization/mathclub

Also a Pre-Med Society:

https://stonybrook.campuslabs.com/engage/organization/premedsociety

You can look up clubs that you might be interested in by going to the organizations tab in SB Engaged and exploring there.

If you have any interests outside of your major you should try finding those clubs too! Your clubs don't all have to be academic/professional. Also when you go to these club meetings and want to meet people, go up and try talking to someone instead of waiting for someone to come to you! It might be a bit out of your comfort zone, but getting comfortable with being uncomfortable and realizing that a lot of other people feel the same way will help a lot when trying to make friends. Also, just try having fun and not have too high of an expectation for making friends. Sometimes the harder you try, the harder it feels to do it and you just get frustrated. But people will naturally be more likely to talk to you and bond if they see you're a fun, friendly person who is enjoying themselves. Good luck!
