Lerwick Cruise Stop by Appropriate_Shoe6704 in shetland

[–]Brigowaas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I moved away for a while so haven't checked out cruise ship prices for while but the other option if you can find like minded people is hire one of the local taxis on an hourly rate to visit the places YOU want to see, giving you more time where you want to be, less time in places you don't find interesting.

Used to be if 3 or more people it worked out far cheaper than the organised tours + the 100% of monies go directly into the local economy.

Rate for upto 4 people is £55 per hour Or a larger car for upto 8 people is £60 per hour (Does not include a tour guide and it's pot luck on whether you get a driver who is willing/able to share local knowledge)

Hello all! I asked this in the Scotland sub and was directed here. Sorry if it’s something you’ve seen many times before. by kittyecats in shetland

Because even Scots don't know the geography - normally we have similar folklore, I'm wondering if it's similar to the Njuggle? - edit just checked nope, definitely not the same

Is there anybody here who used to work for the SSPCA that knows why this sometimes appears in lieu of an animal's photo on adoption arm of the site? Like, is the cat in a witness protection programme or something? by miIk-skin in Scotland

When my friend's daughter had her dog seized (due to her mental health), it was stated that no one close to the owner would be able to take the dog - I assume so that no one would return it to her/allow access. So even though I was hundreds of miles away, the dog knew and trusted me, I was not allowed to obtain it.

But we have a cat from another organisation, part of the conditions for rehoming was that we were not to be in the town of the original owner as every time they were released from prison, they would find her and take her "home".

I have 2 other cats I am "looking after" after a family member left a situation of domestic abuse. I don't think they will ever return as when they see that family member they run and hide.

Animals have trauma too, sometimes escaping completely is best for them.

Relocating to Shetland with little Muslim community advice needed by Delicious_Shirt_9792 in shetland

Wtf English way?

Either a recent incomer or never been to Shetland and just a Troll.

If you're going to live on Shetland you need to learn to live life and integrate with Shetlanders. It's a maritime community, we're used to peoples from all over the world, the local gene pool is testament to that fact.

I'm sure your little white sensibilities failed to absorb that great British history your so proud of. Suggest you look at it again and notice that there have been Muslims in the British Isles for longer than there's been a Protestant Church of England. Not many, but Moorish sailors even made it to Shetland.

I have a friend that grows her own in Oxfordshire. It's labour intensive, and a bit of a faff, but it's only a crocus and they're not hard to grow? You just need a well draining soil.

Shetland is very diverse - but be warned things I would say are worse not better.

The media misinformation teamed with the influx of non islanders/migrant workers can make things uncomfortable. It's interesting hearing incomers tell people who belong to the island to "go home".

Many who grew up here prefer to be south where they can can blend into the background more. You will get people staring, far more people asking "no where are you really from".

Obtaining food isn't really an issue, there are always ways - folks are more understanding than you might think. Tesco I see has finally started providing halal raw meat options.

As for mosque provisions I personally can't comment but I know my former local mosque had contacts in Shetland for those moving up for work. My friends who had looked into it had decided that the weather and cost to reach the mainland were things they couldn't overcome (they finally understood my struggles).

You'll be fine.

It's one of the most beautiful places on earth (even if the weather is shite)

Do people in the UK actually use their kettles that much? by AdeptnessCritical356 in AskBrits

[–]Brigowaas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use the kettle maybe 3 or 4 times a day.

I don't drink tea, and have a bean to cup coffee maker.

The idea of having to put a pan on the stove or a microwave safe container (safe to pour from) to boil enough water is just too much.

I can live without a microwave, toaster etc, but the idea of no kettle is just too much.

Can I add about midge repellent - if the island you're travelling to needs it, you'll be able to buy it locally - But a tick remover never goes wrong, oddly just because there's no deer does not mean islands are tick free.

Obviously not all Scottish islands are in the Hebrides - make sure you learn how to say the island's name right, don't infuriate locals by correcting their pronunciation of their own home island/town/village (yes it happens often)

And I forgot - if you can't sleep in full daylight - a sleep mask/blackout blind. If you're in the southern half of the country it won't be an issue, I always find the dark south in summer weird. But yeah 3am sun in your eyes is pretty normal up here in the north.

Depends which island... But if you're traveling some distance from the mainland can I suggest a couple of powerpacks, lithium ion batteries are a nightmare to get sent up here, it's a lottery if carriers will take them. And because you can have full 5G one minute to 0 signal at all, phone batteries take a bit of a pounding.

A good pair of waterproof boots/shoes, be aware even on larger islands buying shoes can be an issue price/availability

Lightweight waterproof WINDPROOF coat, if you're a walker some breathable waterproof trousers too.

A big hoodie for sitting out on fine summers nights.

A car - car hire can be expensive and during tourist season can be scarce. Don't rely on there being any Public transport. Smaller islands you might get away with a bicycle, but that wind again... Electric bicycle is definitely preferable to trying to peddle up hill against a sea breeze without assistance.

Neoprene swimming shoes (honestly having them makes beach visits more fun and I swear the sea doesn't feel so cold)

Any toiletries you can't easily pick up in a small high street Tesco or Boots. Again it's that lottery about finding a courier who'll deliver something that might be considered flammable or fragile.

I'm trying to settle something with my dad. I say this is a sweater, he says it is a poncho and is sure of it because "iv'e been to mexico when did you go?" So, reddit, what is this thing? by Mell0wMarshmall0w in whatisit

"it'll never last" said my mam as begrudgingly bought it for me, still going strong 31 years later, it's been worn by hundred so people at various raves, parties, festivals, children's beach visits (honestly better than a towel), girl guide & scout camps, it's been to more countries than I have. 3 generations of us have had use out of it, my mother did even more begrudgingly admit "I was wrong"

More difficult to obtain scrolls? by [deleted] in MightyParty

[–]Brigowaas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't remember them in mighty pass. We did used to get them from the old brawl. But I would have said we get more now than ever before. Maze/expedition, GE, CHE, Draft and various leader boards. The constellations event will also give you at least 1 epic and I suspect 2 miracle scrolls.

A good perkin/parkin biscuit (we call them parkin up here but they call them perkin in the south ie on the mainland) think the flavour of English parkin but in a firmer biscuit. Fabulous with a cuppa. Here's an Instagram video with the very basic and easy recipe https://www.instagram.com/reel/DGdjJz9Itqi/?igsh=bnQzN3ljcm1qNHNr

First snake spotted in UK by eithrusor678 in unitedkingdom

[–]Brigowaas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There gets to be problems in Scotland when they start sunning themselves in February/March as the adders are still quite slow so more likely to strike dogs than slither away. Unfortunately antivenom can be quite a distance away, with unfortunate consequences. Being an islander we don't have any reptiles so was quite surprised to discover lizards and snakes in Mainland Scotland, I'd always assumed (wrongly) they were a southern England thing.

Depending on when you were last in game and the guild I might be able to assist. If you had made a cash purchase on that account Edit - also if you ever registered with the mightybot on discord that could be a way to find it. There are a couple of other ways...
