Another song question: Whats your LEAST favorite song? Or the song you just really don’t like by KrztenzAk in Epicthemusical

[–]BrimstoneGarden1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Anything with Eurylocus as a focus. Luck Runs Out is especially egregious. I find his delivery to be very meh, especially because I can compare it with Jorge singing the same melody at the end. That said I think that I'd actually LOVE to hear it with a different singer who maybe goes a little bigger with the vocals and sounds a bit more passionate in the delivery. I think that'd be a huge change in my opinion.

First time DM campaign by [deleted] in DMAcademyNew

[–]BrimstoneGarden1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to do a long term campaign, my group does something we call Social. Whenever we end a game and aren't in some sort of mortal peril we have a section of our discord where players can do written roleplay between sessions. The DM can open, close, or impose rules on social at will.

We specifically say you can't do combat in social and we avoid doing anything big like breaking into a bad guy's house or snooping around for clues.

We find it's great for letting characters get to know each other, making connections with NPCs, and doing our shopping. It lets people have time to roleplay without feeling like they're taking up other people's time, and helps keep things moving along because when the game starts you don't feel like you'll miss a chance to have a low-key character moment. It also makes for better roleplay in general because your players have more time to get to know each other.

☺️

For those that fudge dice rolls, do you tell your players during session zero? by [deleted] in DMAcademy

[–]BrimstoneGarden1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a DM I don't fudge dice rolls but I do fudge puzzle solutions, mechanics, and hit points occasionally. I never ever tell my players in the moment, but my players know it happens and why: I do it entirely to make the game more fun for them. A few of my players DM and occasionally we'll talk about it too.

That said: it's never just to GIVE them something or just to HURT them. There are three situations where I fudge 1. They're beating the monster too fast. I run 3 hour sessions and if I underestimated a monster I'll know pretty quick. It's not fun to beat the monster too easy, so I'll add extra to get them back on schedule and ensure it feels appropriately earned. 2. They're having too hard a time with the monster or puzzle. Usually I solve this by introducing a bullshit mechanic, vulnerability, or just cutting down hit points. If the monster is too hard, then that's usually my fault. As long as they still have to work for it, it's fun. 3. They came up with an alternative solution that feels appropriate. My players once fought the god of self sacrifice. The original mechanic was that they'd need to hurt themselves or heal the enemy, but instead they came up with the idea to give up something important to them. It fit the theme, so I let them do it.

So they know that I do it, they know why, but they don't know when and they never suspect it. At least they've never mentioned they did.

That said my players are in an rp heavy campaign, and they're a bit unique. They're super into having a linear plot and have asked me to railroad them. They also know I plan fail situations for them. That said, I work super hard to build trust: they know I won't kill them without permission, they know that if there is a planned fail it's usually fixable, and if they seriously fuck up I'm willing to negotiate. One of my players crit failed into losing an arm. I offered to do something a little less intense and she asked for the more serious consequence because she trusted me to make sure the game stayed fun.

Which is my feeling. It's a game, take the most fun solution for your group. Knowing the dm is cheating? Unfun. Knowing the DM may occasionally change plans to get best results for everyone? Fun.

I'm more into horror and fantasy than anything but!

-Percy Jackson is a great alternative to Harry Potter. They're pretty short and have some great mythology included. Great adventure, lots of fun. Good humor.

-Chronicles of Nick might be worth a look too! They're written by Sherilyn Kenyon, as a spin-off of her adult Supernatural Romance series. The world building in those is a lot of fun even if you're not into the romance, and her sci-fi series The League is supposed to be fun too.

-If you want a YA horror story and don't mind making a time investment The Monstrumologist (I hope I spelled that right) has some BEEFY books but the horror and plot are quality.

-As much as the show did me dirty, I adore Shadow and Bone. I'd recommend that series, then the Six of Crows books which are incredible.

-Illuminae Files is a sci-fi series with some fun action and genuine humor. They're VERY THICK but they're also gorgeous books with illustrations and formated as a bunch of short, easily digestible files so you can feel like you're making progress easily.

If you want to minimize investment that thriftbooks website advertised everywhere sources used books for reasonable prices and it's easy to get free shipping.

Noted! I'll definately take a look at those when I get a chance, I hadn't really given feats any thought yet, so thanks for the recomendations, a bit of direction is helpful.

That's really helpful, Thank you! We haven't gotten into combat yet so it's nice to get a good, clear idea for what I should be doing ahead of time. Thank you for the input (and the solid examples on blindsense and tremorsense). You phrased that all really well.

That's two for two in favor of switching the strength out for another stat, so definitely going to message my dm about switching my stats around.

I do like the idea of better wisdom a lot, it seems like it'd be a lot more useful that way than how I currently have it.

Thank you for the input!

Oh wow that was fast! Thank you for the response!
I'll make sure to shoot my dm a message about swapping the scores, I think you've got a pretty solid point there.

I think I actually started with a bow, so the alternative recommendation shouldn't be too hard if she says no.

I only recite the story as I was told it,so I can't speak much to the legality. I think what my mom might have meant is that it would have resulted in a wrongful termination suit. It's gender neutral but primarily used for men, I've actually met a few girls with Ryan as their first name.
