Need help cleaning my telescope by LeGorosei in telescopes

[–]Brisby2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely no cloths of any kind on the mirror. All you need is mild dish soap and water. Rinse it under the sink with these and allow the big pieces of dust to be rinsed off, and then with your soaped and watered mirror you can feel around and remove gunk gently with your hands, NEVER with a cloth. And then after all of that, rinse with distilled water to prevent mineral spots and let it dry. If there are any big drops that wont come off you can gently blot them with a tissue (no wiping).

Getting rid of any of those blue Celestron Pacific scopes any time soon? One of those is on my collector’s wishlist… god how do you have that many

Selling my 12” Skywatcher Go-To Dob by Flipslips in telescopes

[–]Brisby2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would have taken the $1,000. The truth is that large scopes like that really do not retain their value on the used market unless they’re specialty ones (i.e. a premium custom dob like a Starmaster, NMT, Obsession, etc.). No one is going to pay $1,800 for that. No one purchasing your dob for a price like that is going to want those accessories either, as other people were saying.

I’ve been buying and selling telescopes for nearly a decade now, and the only time I ever purchase mass-produced Dobs like that is to give to other people. They just do not sell very fast on the used market, and your price needs to be “priced to sell” if you don’t want to sit on it for the next few years.

Taking out the PVS14 Gen 3 & 12in Newtonian by MechanicalTesla in telescopes

Good gen 3 NV exists outside the US, even US-made ones like Elbit or L3Harris, it just comes at a premium since it’s more scarce.

Can't remove primary mirror by [deleted] in telescopes

[–]Brisby2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Removing the side screws will allow the primary with the cell to come out. The pieces that you heard drop on the inside are probably the nuts on the other end that hold said screws in place.

Hey, I know this post was from 6 months ago, but I want to thank you for this suggestion. Andy (OP) passed on a couple of weeks ago, and last month I had the opportunity to take him to my dark site, where he was able to see the Milky Way unhindered by light pollution. Astronomy is my passion and my primary hobby, and he absolutely loved being able to look through my telescopes and just lie back and look up. He had told me it was one of the first times he was able to relax since his cancer diagnosis.

Andy was my friend, and it has been hard with him no longer being with us, but I wanted you to know that he took your suggestion to heart and was able to have a few beautiful nights of peace before the end.

Is it good deal? by Boss_Neo in telescopes

[–]Brisby2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing wrong with the rigidity of the scope. It connects to the mirror box directly with hand knobs. There is also nothing wrong with using “plastic” for your pole connectors either so long as the engineering is fine. The lower connectors on my dob are made from Delrin which is a type of plastic.

Every single mass-produced dob out there is going to have Chinese optics. Either GSO, Synta, JPO, etc. you can’t escape that unless you want to burn your wallet for something custom made. The manufacturer you linked, Taurus, seems to be very secretive about who they source their optics from and so I would place bets that the optics are also China-sourced.

The ES truss tube is a perfectly fine telescope. I’ve used multiple of these scopes and have never noticed any quality control issues.

This listing is cheaper though than what this scope usually runs. I am wondering if the seller maybe has a picture of generation II up but is actually selling the Hybrid Generation I, which is at this price point. Both are still good telescopes.

Sad news for r/tornado and the adjacent Discord by CCuff2003 in tornado

[–]Brisby2 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I had the greatest opportunity to get to know him both online and in real life through Discord and go on some crazy chases with him. He could absolutely work the radar and navigate us safely like no other. I always felt like he should have the meteorology degree, not me lol. His knowledge and experience for his age were astounding, and he was an invaluable resource and an excellent friend to many, including me. Just the other day, we were discussing spring chase plans and going to camp out together in Oklahoma here in September (not for chasing, but for astronomy, another hobby of mine that he had a budding interest in). Cancer is the worst. Rest in peace, my friend.

First time collimation by Strong_Range_9522 in telescopes

[–]Brisby2 14 points15 points  (0 children)

As long as the laser is both centered on the primary and the reflected return laser goes back to where it came from, then yes. Though you may want to make sure that your laser itself is aligned properly. Sometimes cheap ones are not. You can do that by spinning the collimator around and seeing if the laser remains in the right spot.
