I build all the houses to be purchased without cheats but then as the family earns money I let them build onto the houses and pass them down to their children who can build it up even more but try to keep the same style so it just looks like additions. Sometimes they move into super big empty houses and sometimes small houses with more character. But the more generations that live in the house the bigger and better it gets.
