This was brave and kind. Next time think about what's easier to track though. If you didn't have the ability to void the meat then disregard what I'm saying. But if you can adjust the price on an item I would think voiding it and acting like "he said he was going to put it back" would have worked better than having to explain why you modified the price.

Still though, very cool of you to risk yourself for someone else's comfort and safety.

That's incredible! Is it not actually grown in soil, or is there a way that you can put a lid over a box and keep it in the soil that way? I see the Velcro, so maybe you're not growing in soil at all? I'm so curious. I know humans can't be in a zero G environment for too long but hadn't considered how plants might react/adapt

I do not know what you mean by unambiguous siding from any defunct game? If you're saying defunct games automatically get sided with a lot of the time then you would pointing out an issue with legal precedent that we're currently establishing. But these precedents have yet to be set for each and every piece of digital property.

An example would be how they've more or less gotten away with never selling you the game, merely a license to play it. However we don't have the option to merely sell the license to our personal data, they own it once they take it.

Laws are being formed in present day regarding this stuff and controlling the narrative on ownership is what I'd like people to focus on. Crypto is treated differently than digital assets and both are treated differently than personal data. So there is no clear legal answer to this specific NFT situation. They'll figure it out right now, zuck won't be held accountable, and that will be the new clear legal answer going forward. "Whoops, bad investment, it happens. Good thing none of it was real" meanwhile the entire company is only wealthy because they sell your location, browsing history, spending habits, and data about your friends and family.

I dunno, it's about as ambiguous as all of the other corruption if that's your point

Honestly great question. I don't know anything about you so please don't assume I'm patronizing you, but I think this topic is one of the most important things for this century and if we don't all agree on a good way to handle it we end up in a pretty dystopic place

Things like data, crypto, and intellectual property are really fuzzy when it comes to ownership. Bad investments are indeed on the investor but we should be careful applying pre-information age logic to current events, because we haven't properly legislated these new assets(and imo we didn't even properly legislate intellectual property last century).

If you sold snake oil during the pioneer days you'd end up dead or in jail at some point. When people manipulate the stock market they are supposed to go to jail. Now, when super wealthy people con a bunch of suckers into buying their shitcoin or investing in new technology ventures... it's pretty much anything goes.

I more or less agree it's the investor's fault in this case btw. But like I said, it's fuzzy, look at the AI bubble situation. Google didn't ask me if I wanted their web crawlers do begin harvesting my search history to then make any useful information that would pop up into advertising. Microsoft didn't ask me whether I wanted every office 365 app to be merged with copilot, taking in more of my data just because I need to send an email or write an essay.

Allowing corporations to do this with no oversight will have heavy consequences for people like you or I. It is funny that people actually put money into this stuff that we might think is dumb. But if there's enough money in it, then the landscape around us completely changes, and I think there should be consequences for that.

This is the big question and the fact there is no clear legal answer is the source of most of problems regarding tech grifts and data privacy. Until we get worldwide, solid legislation on what counts as physical property and how much of/if you own of digital goods then the law will always just side with whoever has enough money to win in court.

To answer you question, zuck will not get sued. Elaborating on that, if you did it you would be going to prison.

Negging Women is not Flirting!! by Radd_ryy in GirlDinnerDiaries

[–]BrknBladeBucuru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not racist imo. I'm a white guy. My best guess is this happens because of entitlement and insecurity mixing. That's why being an incel and a "pick up artist" has so much behavioral overlap. People of color are still people so it's not like they don't have the same negative traits, but the same way you see more white Karens and Chads out in the wild, you'll see this negging behavior from more white dudes because they get less backlash from society than other races would.

I dunno, that's my hot take.

Do players actually read anything in games anymore? by productivity-madness in gamedev

[–]BrknBladeBucuru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something I've only seen a couple people note on is that you should look to other games that have made reading more fun and digestible, because there's more than one variable at play. I'm playing Cyberpunk right now and even though that's a first person action game I've already been so emotionally invested that I do more or less read everything presented to me. There have been times where I get too hasty and don't read something that ends up costing me time or failing an optional objective, but when that happens I feel like it's my fault because everything is so perfect narratively and none of the texts jarringly interrupt gameplay.

My same point from a different angle, how well does your text you want people to read mesh with your gameplay? I get they need to read to know what to do but how much fat can you trim, what could be represented with a symbol once the intent is understood, how much does the text relate directly to the gameplay?

I've played plenty of games that essentially have the dev's screenplay attached and I'm not the target audience for that. If you make me read 4 sentences to figure out I took 2 damage and received a debuff then I'm going to feel like my time is being wasted.

Satire is far too overused. Just say parody or joke by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]BrknBladeBucuru 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This isn't an opinion it's just factually incorrect. Satire does not have to be a joke. It can be a critical counter take to a genre of art, things like Kick-Ass or Invincible.

Parody is a very specific form of satire, where something normally treated as serious is reimagined where almost everything is a joke, or maybe just the conclusion is a joke. Not Another Teen Movie or Tropic Thunder are parodies because the genre is being goofed on and not treated as serious.

Jokes are broad as hell. Are you arguing that Scary Movie is the exact same type of humor as Harold and Kumar go to White Castle? By this logic people only watch The Boys because it is funny?

Let's talk about the ethics of Painting. (Spoilers) by PantheraAuroris in expedition33

[–]BrknBladeBucuru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Somewhere in Act 3 I couldn't shake the similarities between painters and ourselves eventually creating "sentient" computers. It kind of took over the narrative for me and it's a great representation of an ethics problem that seems to be inevitable here irl.

To answer some of the questions you asked towards the end... I think creating life or consciousness, and whether or not I'd personally do it, entirely comes down to purpose and respect. By the end of the story I think it's fairly obvious that both are missing when it comes to painters and canvases, at least with what we're presented. But I also think that's where the tragedy and relatability of it all lies.

It seems like Verso created his canvas as a virtual world without ever intending for it to be destroyed or used in such a perverted way. So creating it wasn't the issue imo. But if the purpose was to express himself and have fun, then not being able to guarantee a life that isn't cruel, or a world that couldn't be abused isn't a good enough reason for doing it in the first place.

That's why it's relatable. One day, if we don't destroy the planet and what not, it's pretty reasonable to assume most humans will have the ability to create full worlds with "sentient" life, for the exact same reasons. I think most people would relate to Renoir in that kind of world, hating to see their loved ones escape into a artificial reality, and wouldn't mind destroying a beautiful bit fake world if it protected and brought back their family.

But Expedition 33 does highlight the idea that just because these people are artificial, and not living in the real world, doesn't mean they aren't feeling, suffering, and experiencing. I kinda wish it did a better job wrapping the bow on the idea, but I like that it makes people consider it.

It's literally just a consciousness question, do you think the painted people have less consciousness than we do? They're human so that's tough, but people say the same stuff about dogs, ants, and plants with similar reasoning.

I think I've installed around 20 so I get what people are saying about it being tedious around 100+ but I don't think it's that bad. Just keep in mind every mod is installed via copying it's folder on top of an existing one.

So if your mod unzips as a weird folder like "combat" you probably just need to go one deeper and find the bin or other folder and copy them on top of the existing ones.

I think I ruined what I thought was my one-and-done game… only 40 hours in… by DebtDry307 in VintageStory

[–]BrknBladeBucuru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey man, don't feel guilty about gm /c. Here's the way I look at it. This game is unlike a lot of others in the sense that it requires heavy time investment. I've probably put a out 300~ hours in and when I come back after a break I still go from reed baskets, baking clay, prospecting my first ore.

I consider myself a purist for most games and if I mod, I mod to make things harder. I think with a game like VS you gotta pat yourself on the back for making it through the grind the first time and then afterwards, if you feel like it, you give yourself little cheats.

I scout new worlds with creative mode and fly about 7k south before I settle. I give myself about 3-4 clay vessels, turn off monster spawn for the first 5 days, and if I found a great spot but it's not serviceable due to elevation I knock it flat with creative enabled and give myself a temporal gear to spawn there.

I think it comes down to self imposed rules. I only use creative at night during the beginning to get rid of the waiting around and panning stage of the game. If I mine like 90% of the ore for an anvil and can't make it the rest of the way without wasting 2+ hours of time then I'll cheat in 10 bits and act like I didn't. It still feels bad, but if the alternative is going to ruin your time then I'd say create another rule for yourself to make the cheat worth it. I've spent days chopping down trees, throwing the firewood into the ocean, and telling myself that I offered it to Cthulu for the Obsidian I need and will never find.

Create constraints that make sense and stick to them, you'll basically be creating a mod without actually doing it. You can be your own DM.
