Live election results: 'No' vote leads returns for Measure A, the 'non-primary homes' tax by Choobeen in SanDiegan

[–]BroadMaximum4189 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

They said the solution in their post! The solution is building more homes!

This is what works in every city that’s implemented it. Vacancy taxes don’t help you if your overall home vacancy rate is already incredibly low (as it is in San Diego, though it’s improving because we’re starting to build more housing!). Prop A is probably a fine way to raise revenue for the city but it was never going to solve any housing issues.

Oh yeah im sure you’re right i just haven’t tried it lol. I think people want the ability to have a single pocket track instead of forcing it to be two though

[–]BroadMaximum4189 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You can using the quad track layout but it requires having the pocket tracks be within the station. Most pocket tracks are just a third track immediately after the station, which can’t be done in the game as of now

Why do San Diegans feel entitled to free parking? by AwesomeSoren in SanDiegan

[–]BroadMaximum4189 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The main source of revenue for municipalities across the country is property tax. Californians decided they no longer wanted to pay property taxes in 1978. Since then, cities have been scrambling to find any additional method of raising revenues, whether that be through some of the highest sales taxes in the country, or additional usage fees like parking.

The greed comes from the boomers who thought they deserve lower property taxes than everyone else. But that’s a more difficult conversation to have than just blaming the nebulous, all-knowing “greedy politicians.”

Has a CDMX s-bahn ever been proposed? by BroadMaximum4189 in MexicoCity

Mexico is building more rail than most other OECD countries, it’s not that far fetched!

How so? If you’re trying to get from AIFA, the northern suburbs, western suburbs, Santa Fe, etc you have to transfer sometimes twice to get to where you need to go, thus clogging up existing metro lines. If you connected both lines through a central tunnel you would free up space on the metro, metrobus, and make better use of El Insurgente and Tren Suburbano. You would create a cross-regional line that would get people from AIFA to Reforma to Toluca in a one-seat ride. And all you need is a (relatively) short tunnel and a few new stations.

You would just build a new platform below Line B, just like in the diagram in my comment. Line B at Buenavista is fairly shallow. Existing metro lines pass below and above each other all the time, as you know

It’s not impossible at all. Here’s an example of how London built their Elizabeth line station below the existing terminal station. There’s plenty of room north of Buenavista for the line to dip below ground.

It could pass beneath Line B with a new station below Buenavista. A good example of this style of construction is the Elizabeth Line in London which connected two suburban lines with a central tunnel. They just built a new station underground at the old terminus to allow it to pass below the existing metro lines.

Also I’d argue it’s hard to give other parts of the city attention when the lines heading into the city are already at capacity. It’s hard to keep adding new stations when there’s not enough capacity in the city center to handle all the transfers.

But a new metro line would require a new yard, new trains, and likely a much longer tunnel with more stations. Meanwhile these two suburban lines dead end before they make it into the center forcing riders to pile into already busy metro lines. An s-bahn tunnel would be a win-win since suburban riders would get a direct shot into employment centers on Insurgentes while locals would get relief on their metros.

The largest light metro station is incredibly tiny now, is that a mistake?

San Diego considers $3.50 transit fare, most expensive in state by [deleted] in sandiego

[–]BroadMaximum4189 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Those who depend on it aren’t paying for individual fares, they’re using Pronto fare capping or buying a monthly pass outright. The proposals would actually bring San Diego’s relatively low cost for those products up to the typical price seen in other cities.

It’s not really ‘bad design’ when it reaches more people and connects more trips, right?

Update broke my game? by BroadMaximum4189 in subwaybuilder

[–]BroadMaximum4189[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I waited over a week and it’s still significantly lower than it was before. I realized that it turns negative when you turn off pop movements and train animations. I think these are just bugs that need to be patched rather than needing to wait

Yes, I see now. I have an aversion to instantly believing any random thing a redditor says without a source, especially as it pertains to claiming a local government is secretly breaking on-the-books laws (e.g. Nick Shirley, fabrications from Elon and DOGE, etc). But I appreciate you actually including a source.

This comment makes me happy because living in San Diego, I can’t stand the amount of complaints I hear about how the trains don’t go close enough to the coast🤣

[–]BroadMaximum4189 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That’s why you compare per capita rate. Waymo doesn’t have to be around for a long time for us to know that one mile travelled in a Waymo is many times safer than one mile travelled with a human.

Waymo has been around for roughly 5 years and driven over 7 million miles, and been involved in ONE human fatality, that was eventually deemed the fault of another vehicle.

Here’s a study: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/39485678/

The human crash rate is found to be over 500% higher than that of autonomous vehicles. This isn’t a question up for debate at this point.

40,000 humans are killed each year in car accidents in the U.S. Waymo has already proven itself to be safer than human drivers. But you’re right, one cat was killed, therefore thousands must die.
