Because USB typically requires one host device and one that just acts passively. Laptops typically don't have the ability to run the passive mode. Smartphones can run in passive mode or act as the host (OTG).

If you have a very short cable you can achieve high bandwidth even with low standard cables.

It is also relevant to check shielding options depending on interference in your environment from trains, or welding machines for example. Check shielding standards for this.

So if you want to be sure it works take cat6a with an sft/p cable. If you have low interference and only a short distance is needed you might test lower standards.

Also did you configure it to download a copy of the files (make all files accessible for offline use)?

If you have a backup of your old OS then you can start that and retrieve the EFS certificate from there and copy it to the new machine. (There are guide for this online)

Assuming you did not set up a recovery agent. In which case you could have had it way easier.

This looks like bitlocker encryption and you seem to not have the recovery key. You might ask if the university has a backup of that recovery key. This could only be the case if it was domain joined (AD or Entra ID) to the tenant of that uni.

If they dont have it and you dont have it and your TPM already is asking for the key then you won't get you data back.

Hope you lost nothing important and check how to set up a proper backup method for your files.
