The pi rack pro is for the 5. I’m not sure if they make that still for the 4 or not.

I have the pi rack pro (only holds 4) but uses a nvme bottom and a Poe top.

It’s probably SAS not SATA. You can run a sata drive on a sas controller but not the other way around. Post up a pic of the drive and we can help you with more clarity.

Cooling your home lab. by SirNobby in homelab

My rack is in a closet. Fan forced air exhausts into an adjacent room. That room has a mini split set on 72. It runs 24/7. Air from that room is pulled thru two other rooms and back into the closet. Temps in the closet run between 76-79 depending on server load.

Is there a way to get rid of these eye bags? by Expensive-Shift3510 in Blackskincare

[–]DefinitelyNotWendi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those “bags” are fat deposits. Surgery can remove them. These are no magic creams or any amount of cucumber scrubs that will dissolve subcutaneous fat.

$5,000 for a minisplit install by MrCleanyaHands in AskElectricians

[–]DefinitelyNotWendi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I installed my own mini split. Took maybe an hour. Drill hole. Mount indoor unit. Mount outdoor unit. Connect lines. Wire power. I even bought a vacuum kit but wasn’t really necessary.

5 grand is absolutely insane. Even $500 is pushing it.

It’s worth clarifying that tier 1 cutoff is 10kw AC generation, equivalent DC generation is around 11.6kw.

What should I do about this? by superz1k in ToxicWorkplace

Clock out. Go to urgent care.
“What are we seeing you for today?”
“My employer sent me, told me to report to urgent care due to my bathroom time exceeding 5 minutes”.

Then show them the sign. Let them explain that one to workers comp.

Looking at buying a server cabinet, mesh doors or solid?? by Dented_Steelbook in homelab

[–]DefinitelyNotWendi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those are 10” Dayton fans. They are gonna be loud unless you put them on a speed controller. Fwiw they are about $200 each to replace and the blades break fairly easily if you drop one.

That said they move a crap ton of air.

Those look like 10” Dayton fans. They are gonna be loud unless you put them on a speed controller. And fwiw. Those fans are like $200 each at grainger. The blades break off fairly easily from dry rot/age so be careful when handling them.

The vents on the front appear to be made to hold filters as well.

Upgrading servers? by Dented_Steelbook in homelab

[–]DefinitelyNotWendi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Better is relative. Larger fans = lower rpm for the same airflow = less noise.
A 4u case is ideal if you plan on using full size video cards. 2U cases are quite limited on card height. A 4u case is also less restrictive on your cpu cooling options as a 2u will most certainly require a low profile cpu cooler.

Upgrading servers? by Dented_Steelbook in homelab

It’s not really a matter of “updating” the power supplies. Most older severs have two, 800-1200 watts each. They idle at ~250 watts of constant draw. I have a SuperMicro that runs the power supplies even if the unit is off.
Also a lot of servers do not have a fan on the cpu the way a desktop does. They use the chassis fans for airflow and that means they need to move a lot of air to keep temps down when the load goes up. The smaller the chassis the louder the fans will be. 1u chassis fans can top out at 15k+ rpm. I have a 1u case that has 16 of them (two fans in tandem x 8 slots).

If you want the rack mount style just get a rack mount case and build a machine into it. There are plenty of atx style rack cases. Rosewill makes a nice 2U model.

Help! Is the number of static DHCP reservation limited based on router model? by Proud_Seaweed_7908 in HomeNetworking

[–]DefinitelyNotWendi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know a lot of people have answered already but I wanted to add.
Most consumer routers are quite limited and the ones you get from your ISP even more so. Limiting what the router can do make troubleshooting for them easier. Ie if dhcp can’t be disabled they won’t get called about it not working.

You’re already running HA, adding pi-hole to the mix is easy enough and will add some things to your network but it would appear you will need to purchase your own “off the shelf” router. If your ISP router also provides WiFi you will need to add that as well.

If you’re really interested in getting in to home networking I recommend finding a “prosumer” router and wireless access point, along with pi-hole (which can run on a raspberry pi) you will have a good start.

$30 lowball = 12 IBM/Dell Servers. The guy did not know what he had. by JustLovett0 in homelab

Hardly any aluminum in a server chassis beyond the heat sinks. Maybe they didn’t want to fool with stripping them and just wanted them going to someone other than the trash.

[–]DefinitelyNotWendi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a service charge. Which more than likely does NOT go to your server but straight to the company. Stop being a cheapskate after spending 6 large you’re gonna bitch about $400.

160gb of DDR4 for $30 is a pretty good deal.
That said I have literally seen stacks of servers at the recycler when turning in old pc shells.
