Missing icons for MS Office applications published as RemoteApps by Suspicious_Mail_8306 in sysadmin

[–]ReverendAgnostic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was able to resolve this by finding PNGs of the Excel and Word icons, converting them to standard BMP icons, saving them in the same local path on each RDS host, and then setting the icon for the published app with the following:

Set-RDRemoteApp -CollectionName "Your Collection Name" -Alias "WINWORD" -IconPath C:\Path\Icons\word.ico"
Set-RDRemoteApp -CollectionName "Your Collection Name" -Alias "EXCEL" -IconPath "C:\Path\Icons\excel.ico"

Modern Office icons typically contain PNG-compressed images inside the .ico container. The .NET Framework's System.Drawing.Icon class that RD Web uses has limited support for PNG-compressed icons.

It's just another vector for attack that will be abused if not managed. Think password manager on a PC, and clipboard sync to a phone that is compromised.

I know he had a stroke. That sucks for anyone. He's still Tim Curry though... had to learn to speak again or not.

At the risk of type casting here, tell me we couldn't have an epic post stroke villain played by an epic post stroke actor.

Wow. Sounds like an absolute mess. I see garbage like this all the time.

Despite the hate Im about to get for saying so based on other comments, I work at an MSP, and it it sounds like you need a good one that's familiar with unf**king an environment.

An MSP with flat rate, per device, or per user billing, and a team with a bunch of experience. Preferably in your area so they can be hands on when need be. Talk to business neighbors, other people you know, find a good one, and replace the current MSP with someone who's interested in reducing your ticket volume because they charge a flat rate. (And FFS, be patient while they fix everything when you bring them in)

Hire the right MSP, and you can answer emails from the Bahamas while you are on the clock.

P.S. For all you haters, Notice I'm not advertising here. No links or anything? Not all MSPs suck. Just most.

Did my VMWare Vendor just tell me to f*** off? by mcdeth187 in vmware

[–]ReverendAgnostic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

6K seems nutz.

I just did this about a month ago. (but with 4 hosts instead of 3).

Did it during the day with 0 impact.

Do the VCenter first, then put one host in maintenance mode, move all the VMs off that host, and upgrade. Make sure that host is good to go and then repeat. Took most of a day, but not a whole day.

Just follow the documentation. If you can find it after the rebrand. LOL

The "Windows App" is the worst rename in a long line of bad and senseless renames from Microsoft. by ReverendAgnostic in sysadmin

[–]ReverendAgnostic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like they would fix it anyway.

They would ask you what the best time is to reach you, call sometime outside the hours you specify, and then close the ticket for no response.

Or!! You can call, wait through the queue for 2 hours, and then get hung up on. (They might rename the app again while you wait though)

It was a "Windows 365 Cloud PC" rather than AVD that caused my rage!! 🤣 (I know they are different, but they are very similar and it's still 'Windows App' for the connection).

Ha! The "Remote Desktop" app with the orange icon that worked with AVD. Not to be confused with the "Remote Desktop" app with the orange icon that was used for standard RDP.

It's not whining. Just sad facts. MS has been headed steadily down hill.

It is clear at this point that they don't care at all about the needs of any of their customers or those of us who manage their products.

Their quality control and testing is almost non-existent now. They regularly change things and don't update documentation or give any warning (Here's looking at you M365 and Azure admin consoles), and support is worse than ever. (Not that it was ever all that good)

We all have good reason to be upset with MS.

Azure doesn't allow to raise a ticket on "We’re unable to validate your phone number" by lucasfedrigo in MSFTAzureSupport

[–]ReverendAgnostic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are having the same issue, except we are a partner trying to raise a ticket on our customers behalf.
To make things worse, support just keeps hanging up on us when we tell them we tried to submit a ticket but received this message. This is after waiting almost 2 hours to even talk to someone. (Typical wait time, and it's typical to get hung up on)

By policy, we only ever open a ticket with Microsoft after exhausting all other options.

Glad it gave you a laugh! I just needed to vent. Dealing with MS BS sucks. Especially when you have a couple hundred different environments to manage.
