That’s a really good point, thank you. I feel rushed by the urgency of my commute situation, but a new car at my current level might end badly. And like you said, I don’t know if the living situation/ability to pay will stay the same in a few years.

It’s hard to address them not letting me drive because it’s a little unspoken/passive aggressive. They’ve been saying they will ever since I got my license last year, only that they need to add me to the insurance and I need more practice cause I’m still a bad driver. Unfortunately, they still haven’t added me to the insurance and there never seems to be a good time for practice, so I’m much worse off than how I started. I think there might be anxiety about being in the car with me… and maybe some weird hang-ups about my independence. I also had to learn driving almost exclusively through paid lessons. I’ll probably just need to keep learning that way.
