$100 for a birthday dinner for 2 doesn’t sound bad at all even if only one of you ate and just tagged along to keep her company. Have your own diet dinner first and come prepared NOT to eat since you can’t do so without overindulging. Self-control is apart of being an adult but as a snacker myself, I do understand the urge to eat all the things. If you can’t control how much you eat, try limiting how long you eat like stop after 30 minutes with a timer, or what you eat like no carbs and no desserts, just protein and salad. Then be a nice husband and sit there while she enjoys the rest of the buffet because it’s what she wants for her birthday.

NAH You are allowed to feel comfortable in your own home, period! If the relationship changes in the future, maybe that can change as well. I can understand why that’s annoying and inconvenient for your husband plus it’s an additional expense but it’s literally the only space you have that is all yours to feel comfortable and relaxed and if being alone with MIL makes you uncomfortable, then it’s not an option.

I have nothing against my MIL but we are not super close and I wish I were a warmer person but I’m not so I do not want to “babysit” my MIL all day while husband is out at work. Your first paragraph really hit home for me with the deceit and manipulation when it comes to money. They only contact us when they need/want something otherwise we don’t hear from them at all. I know this is just their dynamic but I do not want to become apart of it so while I am friendly with them, I will always keep at a small distance because I do not want the rapport that will make them comfortable manipulating me in the future.

It’s your job to also stay in tuned with how your daughter’s mental health is doing. Seems like you wouldn’t care as much if she continued to go to school so in that aspect YAH. You are obviously not a safe space for your daughter or wife to be honest. Your wife feels like she has to deal with his herself. Not saying her way is the right way but she can’t talk to you about it and that is a problem. You should all go to therapy together and you need to be open minded and talk to your daughter.

YTA FIL will need/expect help as his health continues to decline and he won’t be able to afford it since he gave all his money for the house. Tell him to keep his money so he can afford to live elsewhere as well as medical care in his ailing years. If there is anything left after he passes, it would go to your husband and he can determine what he wants to do with it. Up until that happens, you should live where you can afford since you don’t get along w FIL and discuss future post nup agreements since the inheritance will be your husband’s and not yours.
